BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES
Bridge Patrol Operators use light, medium, and heavy wrecker equipment to patrol the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Tappan Zee Bridge and related facilities and remove disabled vehicles.
These positions are classified only at the Thruway Authority.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
BRIDGE PATROL OPERATOR: drives and operates light, medium, and heavy duty wreckers; prepares vehicles for towing; and performs preventive and routine maintenance of the patrols emergency service equipment.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
BRIDGE PATROL OPERATOR
Operates lifting and towing equipment and drives patrons vehicles when operator is unable to remove vehicle from bridge.
Installs spare tires, dispenses gasoline, and disconnects drive shafts as a means of expedient removal of disabled vehicles.
Observes structural, navigation and aviation elements for unusual conditions or damage and report as required.
Assists bridge maintenance forces with traffic control, repair and maintenance work, and snow and ice removal.
Maintains logs and records of emergency services and fuel activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
BRIDGE PATROL OPERATOR
Non-competitive: Possession of a CDL Class B license with towing endorsement AND one year of experience working as an automobile mechanic performing minor repairs, lubrication and general service work, including operation and maintenance of towing equipment.
