Classification Standard
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES
Laboratory Equipment Designers and Senior Laboratory Equipment Designers develop, design, repair, operate, and/or maintain laboratory devices and apparatus used for scientific research by scientists, research engineers, chemists, physicists, physicians, and other scientists. Laboratory equipment is designed and/or modified according to instructions from scientists in varying disciplines who describe the general nature of the experiment to be conducted and the type of equipment needed for the experiment. Laboratory Equipment Designers and Senior Laboratory Equipment Designers work closely with research scientists throughout the testing and modifying of laboratory equipment process to ensure the equipment meets the requirements for the laboratory procedure.
Laboratory Equipment Designers and Senior Laboratory Equipment Designers are classified in the Departments of Environmental Conservation, Health, Transportation, and various State University of New York (SUNY) educational facilities. Most of these positions exist at various SUNY educational facilities. Parenthetic titles exist in some of these agencies. For the latest information on parenthetic titles for this class, please contact the Division of Staffing Services.
All positions in this class and parenthetic positions are classified in the non-competitive jurisdictional class.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
LABORATORY EQUIPMENT DESIGNER: entry level for the series. Performs work under the direction of a Senior Laboratory Equipment Designer; responsible for the development and design rather than the construction of special devices and apparatus used for laboratory experiments.
SENIOR LABORATORY EQUIPMENT DESIGNER: supervises subordinate Laboratory Equipment Designers and/or lower level staff assigned to perform various tasks in the design, construction, operation and repair of laboratory equipment. Performs the more complex design, construction, operation, and repair of laboratory equipment than typically assigned to Laboratory Equipment Designers.
LABORATORY EQUIPMENT DESIGNER: evaluates, modifies, designs, fabricates, operates, and maintains various electromechanical laboratory devices and equipment; designs, constructs, modifies and/or redesigns scientific and medical instrumentation; corrects manufacturing design deficiencies through appropriate modifications; develops, tests, demonstrates and prepares written instructions regarding the proper operation of various laboratory equipment; repairs and calibrates laboratory equipment and instruments; coordinates with scientists in various disciplines to ensure laboratory equipment design/modification meets experiment requirements; obtains replacement parts, supplies and service from vendors or manufacturers; in the absence of the Senior level position in this class, the Laboratory Equipment Designer may supervise lower level staff in the design, construction, operation, and repair of laboratory equipment.
SENIOR LABORATORY EQUIPMENT DESIGNER: performs any of the duties assigned to Laboratory Equipment Designers; supervises subordinate staff in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use.
LABORATORY EQUIPMENT DESIGNER
Non-competitive: High School diploma and two years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use.
SENIOR LABORATORY EQUIPMENT DESIGNER
Non-competitive: High School diploma and four years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use; or Bachelors Degree with specialization in machine design and two years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use.
NOTE: Classification Standards illustrate the nature, extent and scope of the duties and responsibilities of the classes they describe. Standards cannot and do not include all the work that might be appropriately performed by a class. The minimum qualifications are those which were required for appointment at the time the Classification standard was written. Please contact the Division of Staffing Services for current information on minimum qualification requirements for appointment or examination.
