Classification Standard


            Disaster Assistance Representatives work with federal and local counterparts to expedite recovery after a disaster or emergency; and help localities and individuals receive reimbursement from disaster-related damages.

These positions are found only in the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.


            Disaster Assistance Representatives are activated after a disaster or emergency to assist in the response. They work intermittently and for a limited duration; and their appointments are treated as casual. They typically work under the general supervision of the State public assistance officer in headquarters or field office.


            Disaster Assistance Representatives perform preliminary damage assessments immediately following a disaster or provide technical support to others conducting such surveys; collaborate with the Federal Emergency Management Agency public assistance coordinator during recovery operations; provide technical assistance in applying for federal reimbursement; participate in the inventory and distribution of equipment, goods, and supplies;  perform program reviews and project analysis for recovery project schedules and payments; draft reports on response and recovery efforts, needs, and preliminary damage assessments; and perform project close-out inspections after recovery operations.



Open-Competitive: Bachelors degree and two years of relevant experience in areas such asconstruction services, bridges, road systems, HVAC, public service, computers, water treatment facilities, parks and recreation, environmental sciences/permitting, management, military, auditing; or six years of relevant experience in the areas listed above.
