Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TITLE

This position uses scientific and technical knowledge to manage and direct the operations, programs, maintenance, and related activities at Bayard Cutting Arboretum and evaluate, plan, and enhance the historic landscapes, buildings, and collections of trees, shrubs, and flowers at the arboreta. 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This position is in the non-competitive jurisdictional class.  The Board of Trustees has significant input into the selection of the individual to fill this position. 

DIRECTOR BAYARD CUTTING ARBORETUM:  one position class assigned to manage all activities and operations at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum, a site consisting of historic landscapes, buildings, gardens, and tree collections.

RELATED CLASSES

            Landscape Architects design and supervise the construction and maintenance of landscaping for highways, buildings, and parks and coordinate work with engineers and architects on assigned projects.

            Horticultural Technicians propagate, maintain, and treat with fertilizers and disease control methods a variety of plants at major greenhouses and gardens.

            Park Managers manage, supervise, and maintain park and recreation facilities operated by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and supervise programs, activities, and operations at those sites.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

DIRECTOR BAYARD CUTTING ARBORETUM:  under the general direction of the General Park Manager, plans, develops, and directs the Bayard Cutting Arboretum; works closely with the Board of Trustees to negotiate for funds; oversees expenditures; coordinates programs and resources with the Board and community and horticultural organizations to develop, maintain, and enhance the Arboretum; works with community and educational groups to promote visitation, coordinate educational and interpretive program needs, and encourage public participation in and support for programs; develops and monitors rehabilitation and capital improvement programs; establishes and implements policies and procedures; analyzes staffing and program needs; plans and implements interpretive programs; plans, implements, and evaluates the site master plan for the operation, restoration, and maintenance  of existing collections and landscaping and development of future projects and collections; plans and monitors horticultural care and maintenance programs; develops record keeping systems for the collections;  and provides technical assistance and advice and speaks to businesses, community groups, and scientific and technical organizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

DIRECTOR BAYARD CUTTING ARBORETUM:  Bachelor’s Degree in landscape architecture, ornamental horticulture, or a closely related field and five years’ experience, including three years in a managerial capacity  in the planning, design, and supervision of an arboretum that includes historic buildings and landscape or an equivalent combination of education and experience; experience must include the propagation, acquisition, identification, and classification of plant species and general administration, including personnel, budgeting, and public relations; Master’s Degree in a closely related field may be substituted for one year of general experience
