Classification Standard

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

College Camp Assistants work directly with program staff to deliver summer camp activities to school age children. They are responsible for the general welfare of campers and for ensuring a safe and secure camp environment. 

Positions exist only at the campuses of the State University of New York.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

COLLEGE CAMP ASSISTANT: temporary, casual positions; work with campers in small groups as group leader, assistant group leader, or assistant; may develop and conduct special activities for campers, such as educational and recreational programs.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Supervise and assist campers in educational and recreational activities; ensure the safe arrival and departure of campers; escort campers to and from all scheduled activities; assist program staff in conducting various events; ensure campers eat lunch, maintain proper hydration, and apply insect repellant and sun screen; when assigned as group leader or assistant group leader, supervise junior staff members, ensuring that they follow all schedules and camp safety guidelines; plan and conduct educational or recreational programs for campers, ensuring availability of materials and equipment; and coordinate or assist with sports competitions or camp productions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Open Competitive:  Must be a college or high school student; or possess a GED or high school diploma.  Experience working with school age children, or specialized health and safety certifications may be required for certain positions.
