BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

 

 

The positions research, analyze, and develop policy recommendations for economic development projects.  The positions are classified at the Department of Economic Development.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

          COMMERCE POLICY ANALYST 1:  analyze economic data to develop, assess, and evaluate various approaches to economic development in the private and public sector.

          COMMERCE POLICY ANALYST 2: supervisory level; lead staff in the development of economic policies, and recommend program proposals to agency management.  The positions supervise analysts and staff assigned to economic development teams.


 

RELATED CLASSES

          Economic Development Program Specialists apply business knowledge, training and experience to provide a wide range of professional and management level economic development services for the promotion of business, tourism and international trade in New York State.  Incumbents provide technical advice and problem-solving assistance to economic development organizations and businesses by conducting business-to-business marketing programs, and promoting and publicizing the business and economic development services of the Department of Economic Development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

          COMMERCE POLICY ANALYST 1

Non-Competitive: Masters degree in Economics, Public Administration, Public Affairs, Policy Sciences, Political Science, Government and at least two years of experience requiring the analysis and interpretation of governmental policy issues and preparation of written reports.  At least one year of this experience must have been specifically involved in conducting economic development analysis or related field.   

          COMMECE POLICY ANALYST 2

Promotion: one year of competitive service as a Commerce Policy Analyst 1.

Non-Competitive: Masters degree in Economics, Public Administration, Public Affairs, Policy Sciences, Political Science, Government and at least three years of experience requiring the analysis and interpretation of governmental policy issues and the preparation of written reports.  At least one year of this experience must have required the supervision of an economic development analysis team.
