Classification Standard

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

Positions in this series control the inventory stores for the Thruway Authority’s Divisions and statewide operation. Incumbents support inventory control, procurement, and distribution; work with inventory management and purchasing staff; and establish and ensure adherence to operating standards.

 

These positions are classified only at the New York State Thruway Authority.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

ASSISTANT THRUWAY STORES SUPERVISOR:  when assigned within either a division or at the Main Office, manages an inventory program consisting of inventory part numbers, motorized equipment, shop equipment and tools, and surplus materials; and supervises warehouse, and office positions, that include lower-level supervisory positions.

 

THRUWAY STORES SUPERVISOR: one position class; controls the inventory stores for all divisions and bureaus of the Thruway Authority; establishes operating and maintenance standards; and prepares the stockroom and stores control operating budget.

         

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

ASSISTANT THRUWAY STORES SUPERVISOR:  Establishes and oversees the operation of a division computerized inventory management system, ensures adequate supplies are available to serve program needs.  Provides training and supervises and evaluates employee performance.  Provides technical guidance and assistance in the preparation of purchase specifications.  Evaluates inventories at various locations to determine if requested materials can be located with the division rather than ordered.

Collects data on sources of supply, annual usage, storeroom locations, standard packaging, seasonal requirements, and customer satisfaction; and controls expenditures within division and reports any large variances to management.  Operates the division Tool Loan Program to provide tools, on a short-term basis, to all division users.

 

THRUWAY STORES SUPERVISOR:  Provides program direction and supervises inventory management positions in the Divisions and Main Office.  Prepares instruction and procedure manuals for operation and control of stores facilities.  Establishes and reviews inventory part number assignment procedures and ensures continuity throughout the Thruway Authority; adjusts minimum/maximum levels and reorders points for all inventory items; maintains perpetual inventory records; and assists in taking periodic physical inventories of actual stock on hand.  Monitors, controls, and coordinates surplus disposal, inventory reduction projects, and section imprest inventories.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

ASSISTANT THRUWAY STORES SUPERVISOR

Promotion:  one year of service as an Office Assistant 2 (Stores/Mail) or Stores Clerk 2 (Motor Equipment).

 

THRUWAY STORES SUPERVISOR

Promotion:  one year of service as an Assistant Thruway Stores Supervisor.
