Classification Standard

 

            Institution Retail Stores positions operate self-supporting, non-profit, retail stores on the grounds of various Office of Mental Health and Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities facilities for the convenience of residents, visitors, and employees, providing retail services which otherwise would not be available.  These Institution Retail Store positions are filled based on the stores ability to support its total personnel service expenses.  They may also be used to provide paid work experience to residents as part of the rehabilitation programs of the facilities.

 

            Institution Retail Stores prepare and serve lunches, and sell candy, soft drinks, ice cream, groceries, newspapers, magazines, paperback books, tobacco, clothing, luggage and appliances.  Earnings over and above operating costs are expended for recreation supplies and equipment and other patient benefit purposes for which State funds are not appropriated.  Cash registers are balanced daily in the facility business office and accounts are maintained in the business office.

 

            INSTITUTION RETAIL STORE ASSISTANT MANAGER is a general assistant to an Institution Retail Stores Manager in a self-supporting store with an annual sales volume of $150,000 or more:  when Manager is on duty provides immediate supervision to part of the operation such as food preparation and service or dry goods and groceries, assumes responsibility for the operation of the store in the absence of the Manager but does not ordinarily do the purchasing.  As needed, performs any or all the tasks described for Institution Retail Store Clerk.  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Open Competitive:  one year of responsible retailing experience including substantial experience in food preparation and service.

 

            INSTITUTION RETAIL STORE MANAGER 1 directs the operation of a self-supporting institution retail store with an annual sales volume of more than $90,000 and less than $285,000; trains and supervises employees; arranges work schedules to cover operating hours; reassigns employees and adjusts operations to meet workload variations; compares the prices and quality of goods offered by different vendors and purchases accordingly; sets price markup for goods not prescribed by department guidelines; establishes menus; supervises stock inventory maintenance and reorders stock as indicated thereby; takes inventory; provides supervisor with daily reports of sales and purchases; ensures that vending machine contracts are fulfilled and repairs to machines are quickly made; arranges merchandise displays; ensures cleanliness and sanitation in store operations; interviews job applicants and makes hiring recommendations; evaluates job performance and recommends retention or dismissal; evaluates the work of institution residents and provides reports same to treatment staff.  These managers report to the institution business officer who reviews financial results and quality of service, and who controls store employment and pricing and merchandise policies.  QUALIFICATIONS:  Promotion:  One year of permanent service as Institution Retail Store Assistant Manager.  Open-Competitive:  One year of experience as a retail stores manager with responsibility for purchasing and retail food preparation and service; or an Associate's degree or higher in retailing or business administration and six months of experience in retail food preparation and service.
