Classification Standard

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

 

Examinations Editors edit and proofread examinations and related materials, including Regents Examinations, Regents Competency Tests, Second Language Proficiency Examinations, Occupational Education Proficiency Examinations, and scoring keys, rating guides, teacher dictation copies, reference guides, and examination directions. These positions are classified only in the New York State Education Department.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

ASSISTANT EXAMINATIONS EDITOR: full performance level; under the general direction of an Examinations Editor, edits educational examinations.

 

EXAMINATIONS EDITORsupervisory level; under the general direction of an Assistant in Education Testing or higher-level staff, responsible for the editorial content of examinations for a unit, and trains and supervises staff, including Assistant Examinations Editors, assigned to editing examinations.

 

RELATED CLASSES

 

Assistants in Educational Testing develop test blueprints (content and process specifications, formats, etc.) for new or significantly revised state examinations and testing programs; provide oversight, coordination and supervision to examination committees and item writers; and perform field and office work in the development, analysis, construction, and administration of educational tests.  They may participate in the preparation of Requests for Proposals, evaluation of proposals submitted by contractors, and oversight of work performed by contractors. 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

ASSISTANT EXAMINATIONS EDITOR

 

Drafts educational examinations and related materials, including the preparation of reports, as required.

 

Edits examinations and related materials for clarity, grammar, and format according to established guidelines and timelines, and proofreads typed copy and printer’s proof.

 

Monitors progress of examinations and related materials through all test development stages.

 

Maintains files of examinations and field tests.

 

May work with staff and vendors on translated and Braille versions of examinations to proofread, check art work, front cover, numbering, etc.

 

EXAMINATIONS EDITOR

 

Performs all duties and responsibilities of an Assistant Examinations Editor.

 

Establishes production schedules for tasks related to exam processing and monitors progress to meet deadlines.

 

Maintains strict security of examinations as part of the test development team.

 

Advises subordinate staff and subject matter specialists in matters of style and format according to stylistic conventions and agency editorial policies.

 

Performs the full range of supervisory responsibilities.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

ASSISTANT EXAMINATIONS EDITOR

 

Open Competitive: Bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in English* AND one year of professional experience where the primary responsibility of your position must have involved editing. This experience must include reviewing and revising factual written material for publication to achieve correctness and clarity of language AND ensuring that typed or printed materials are error free AND completing editorial work to meet established deadlines.

 

* You must have a minimum of 15 semester credit hours in English. Up to three semester credit hours in either journalism or communications may be substituted for English credits on a credit-for-credit basis to reach the 18 required semester credit hours.

 

EXAMINATIONS EDITOR

 

Promotion: One year of permanent competitive service as an Assistant Examinations Editor.  

 

Open Competitive: a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 24 semester credit hours in English** AND two years of professional experience where the primary responsibility of your position must have involved editing. This experience must include reviewing and revising factual written material for publication to achieve correctness and clarity of language AND ensuring that typed or printed materials are error free AND completing editorial work to meet established deadlines.

 

** You must have a minimum of 18 semester credit hours in English. Up to six semester credit hours in either journalism or communications may be substituted for English credits on a credit-for-credit basis to reach the 24 required semester credit hours.
