Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Developmental Disabilities Public Education Specialists design and present education programs that facilitate the awareness, understanding, and acceptance of people with disabilities at elementary schools, secondary schools, and other educational facilities such as camps, public libraries, and special interest groups.

These positions are classified at Developmental Disabilities Services Offices (DDSO) within the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.  Incumbents at OMRDD are responsible for the total care of individuals with developmental disabilities.  All incumbents perform various duties and functions in conjunction with the overall operation of a facility and/or location to which they are assigned.

RELATED CLASSES

Education Program Assistants 1 perform a variety of activities in support of developing, implementing, regulating, and maintaining programs of the Education Department. Positions may supervise a small clerical staff.  Incumbents receive their work assignments from Supervising Education Program Assistants.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Present and administer public education programs for an assigned region.

- Develop materials, resources, and speaker lists for educational program presentations.

- Prepare reports documenting statistical information related to presentations.

- Coordinate activities between the State and various contracting educational service agencies.

- Serve as an education advocate and liaison for communities.

- Schedule presentations for schools and interested community organizations.

- Theatrical performances may involve mechanical operation of puppets.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Non-Competitive:  A high school diploma and two years experience in either developmental disabilities presentations, experience leading educational groups, role playing, simulation activities, or theatre; or an Associates Degree in social services, human services, education, communication, theatre, and one year of experience in clinical developmental disabilities, public education, public relations, or theatre; or a Bachelors Degree in one of the above-stated fields.
