Classification Standard

Brief Description of CLASS

          Technical Writers 2 prepare and edit technical documentation for information technology and other areas, presenting the information accurately in concise, focused format that is easy to understand.

Distinguishing Characteristics

          Technical Writer 2: advanced performance level; deals with a wide range of documentation and varying audiences; may supervise.  Such positions spend the majority of their time writing technical materials and are not a substitute for positions that may, as part of their duties and responsibilities, be required to prepare written materials.

RELATED CLASSES

Tax Publications Editors 1 and 2 write and review technical and specialized publications for the Department of Taxation and Finance.

          Senior Editors Audit Reports write and edit formal performance audit reports relating to the examination of local governments and prepare other technical documents.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Draft and edit various documents, including policy papers, technical procedures, other technical documentation, RFIs and RFPs, using word processing, spreadsheets, and other software.

Analyze the information and present it in a format that is easy to read and understand.

Summarize data.

Assist with the development and enhancement of standards and templates.

Edit position papers drafted by others.

Produce internal working papers in support of research initiatives.

Work with staff to ensure the appropriate content, tenor and style of communication most appropriate for the required information.

Develop, write, and maintain information for internal and external audiences such as online help, installation, and upgrade instructions.

Create project management metrics reports using appropriate measures such as key performance indicators.

Evaluate process performance data and help identify and quantify opportunities for improvement

Prepare various process reengineering documents including Target Environment Reports, As-Is System Analysis, Strategic Planning and Envisioning documents.

Facilitate meetings including the development of business process requirements.

Conduct related research as needed, such as testing documented procedures from beginning to end or working with information technology staff to confirm that following the documented procedures will allow successful completion of desired tasks.

Conduct interviews and write documents to accurately capture requirements.

Perform and implement technical and peer reviews of product documentation.

May design survey questions and publish surveys.

May distribute finalized documents to target audience.

May supervise professional and support staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          TECHNICAL WRITER 2

Open Competitive: Bachelors degree and four years of experience in technical writing, which entails experience writing procedures or guidelines; requirements; manuals, reports; user, training or reference manuals; release notes; or test plans and scripts.
