Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The Director Developmental Disabilities Nutritional Services plans, coordinates, and directs statewide nutrition services for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities in programs operated or certified by the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). The incumbent develops, implements, and evaluates nutrition service policies and procedures; oversees Nutrition Services Administrators located in Developmental Disabilities State Operation Offices (DDSOO); and manages the delivery of nutrition services throughout the State.

This position is classified in OPWDD.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

DIRECTOR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES NUTRITIONAL SERVICES: one position class located in Central Office; directs, manages, and evaluates OPWDD’s statewide nutrition services program; develops and implements policies and procedures for nutrition services and food service management; and oversees Nutrition Services Administrators and the delivery of nutrition services to individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities throughout the State.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

          DIRECTOR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES NUTRITIONAL SERVICES  

Plans, oversees, and coordinates OPWDD’s statewide nutrition services program.

· Develops, implements, and evaluates nutrition service policies and procedures, in accordance with laws, rules, and regulations, and evidenced-based practices.

· Plans, establishes, evaluates, and maintains standards for clinical nutrition services and food service management.

· Oversees, supervises, and collaborates with Nutrition Services Administrators; and coordinates and provides overall direction in the statewide implementation of policies and procedures.

· Visits program sites; observes clinical nutrition and food service practices; determines the quality and effectiveness of service delivery; and provides guidance and direction for improvement.

· Provides technical assistance, guidance, and direction to State and voluntary provider staff on various aspects of nutrition services; and disseminates information and training materials on new laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines.

· Reviews individuals’ nutrition records to determine the appropriateness and quality of provided services, and investigative reports on incidents related to nutritional concerns, providing feedback to review committees.

· Analyzes the potential impact of proposed legislation on nutrition services; and evaluates nutrition service data, identifies gaps in service delivery, and develops nutrition programs to meet individuals’ needs.

· Acts as liaison or confers with local, State, and federal organizations, agencies, provider associations, and other groups to plan nutrition services; and may meet with individuals and families to discuss specific issues and improve the quality of nutrition care provided to individuals.

· Assists in food service design and/or modification activities; evaluates equipment and layout selections; and ensures compliance with applicable requirements.

· Participates in agency initiatives, projects, and interdisciplinary committees pertaining to nutrition services. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          DIRECTOR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES NUTRITIONAL SERVICES

Promotion: two years of service as a Nutrition Services Administrator 2.

Open Competitive: a bachelor’s degree in nutrition, food service management, or closely related field; current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration as a Registered Dietitian; and five years of post-registration experience planning, coordinating, and/or supervising a food or nutrition program in a hospital, facility, or community-based residential setting. Three years of this experience must have been at a supervisory level in a food or nutrition program dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
