Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

Positions in this title series are responsible for tending various machines and performing a variety of routine manual laundry tasks in a State institutional laundry.  Incumbents perform a variety of routine and repetitive laundry tasks such as loading, unloading, checking, sorting, and marking of apparel and flatwork, and operate such laundry equipment such as flatwork ironers, extractors, and tumblers. 

Positions in this series are classified in the residential facilities of the New York State Offices of Mental Health (OMH) and Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD); in the rehabilitation centers of the Department of Health (DOH); at the State University of New York (SUNY); at the Education Departments School for the Blind; and the Department of Correctional Services (DOCS). All incumbents assist in the total care/confinement of clients/consumers/inmates and perform various duties and functions in conjunction with the overall operation of a facility and/or location to which they are assigned. 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

LAUNDERER: full-performance level; perform routine laundry tasks such as loading, unloading, checking, sorting, and marking of wearing apparel and flatwork.

SENIOR LAUNDERER:  lead worker and/or working supervisor; lead, coordinate, and oversee the activities of a small group of launderers or clients/consumers/inmates engaged in the performance of routine laundry tasks; may serve as an assistant to a Laundry Supervisor or oversee laundry operations in a small laundry operation. 

LAUNDRY SUPERVISOR: supervisory level; supervise a staff of laundry workers, or clients/consumers/inmates in a State facility laundry that is responsible for processing between 20 and 40 dry tons of laundry per month.  May serve as a subordinate supervisor in charge of one, or a combination of, operational divisions, in a facility laundry headed by either a Laundry Manager, or Head Laundry Supervisor.    

HEAD LAUNDRY SUPERVISOR:  supervisory level; supervise a staff of laundry workers, or clients/consumers/inmates in a State facility laundry that is responsible for processing an average of between 40 dry tons and 150 dry tons per month. 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

            LAUNDERER

Perform routine laundry tasks. 

-          Load and unload trucks, carts, and bags of laundry.

-          Sort soiled articles into groups according to laundry treatment each will receive.

-          Load, unload and tend such laundry machines as washers, tumblers, and extractors.

-          Mark laundry with identifying symbols assigned to specific departments, buildings, and individuals.

-          Sort finished laundry for distribution according to identifying symbols.

-          Inspect articles and return those heavily stained or torn for washing, spot removal, or mending.

-          Finish laundry with hand irons and presses.

-          Tend pressing machine to press washed apparel such as uniforms, caps, jackets, aprons, and pants.

-          Shake out creases and sort semi-dry flatwork and garments preparatory to feeding into flatwork ironer or pressing machine.

-          Fold clean, damp, flatwork articles such as towels, sheets, drapes and spreads and feeds into flatwork ironer.

-          Clean work area and machines.

-          Report breakdown or malfunctions of machines to supervisor.

SENIOR LAUNDERER

May perform all of the duties and responsibilities of a Launderer.

Oversee a group of clients/consumers/inmates in the operation of a bank of washers, extractors, or dry tumblers. 

-          Oversee and provide instruction on proper usage of laundering equipment.

-          Demonstrate proper methods and procedures.

-          Observe and assist as necessary to ensure quality and maintain work flow according to prescribed standards.

-          When supervising clients/consumers/inmates, incumbents must be aware of, and account for, their activities at all times while on the job, and ensure that the rules and regulations of the facility governing such activities are followed.

-          Inspect washing or finishing work at various stages of processing to ensure that operating procedures were followed, and that the work meets quality and production standards.

-          Return/reassign work not meeting standards for rewashing, spot removal, mending and the like.

Maintain equipment.

-          Clean equipment.

-          Lubricate moving parts according to operating manuals and facility procedures.

-          Report breakdown of equipment or machinery to the supervisor.

-          May make adjustments to laundry equipment and machinery.

Maintain Standards of Laundry Operation.

-          Maintain written daily production records.

-          Attend periodic meetings with the supervisor to discuss such factors as production schedules, rates of production and quality and production problems.

-          Maintain safety and sanitation standards in the work area.

May oversee the distribution, fitting, alteration, and coding of resident clothing in a central clothing shop.

May serve as an assistant to a Laundry Supervisor in a large laundry operation or an overall supervisor of inmates/consumers/clients in laundry operations in a small laundry operation.

-          Set production goals, priorities, and deadlines.

-          Assign work/delegate assignments.

-          Maintain production records.

LAUNDRY SUPERVISOR

May perform all of the duties and responsibilities of a Senior Launderer.

Supervise subordinate staff.

-        Provide supervision, guidance, and oversight to subordinate staff, and intervene and resolve problems as necessary.

-        Determine and oversee staff assignments.

-        Approve leave and track time and attendance.

-        Review, monitor, and evaluate staff performance.

-        Complete performance evaluations.

-        Identify training needs and arrange for provision of training.

-        Manage and direct program activities by setting priorities and deadlines.

Supervise a staff of laundry workers, and/or clients/consumers/inmates in a State facility laundry that is responsible for processing between 20 and 40 dry tons of laundry per month.   

-        Plan work schedules according to amount of laundry to be processed.

-        Schedule workloads and assign workers to maintain an even flow of work.

-        Inspect the laundry area periodically to ensure sanitary and safety standards are being met.

-          Observe laundry equipment in use, make adjustments and lubricate equipment according to operation manuals.

-          Notify the general mechanic of malfunction or breakdown of equipment.

-        Test samples of water periodically to determine hardness of water and effectiveness of cleaning agents and stain removers, and change washing formulas as necessary.

-        Prepare and post written formulas indicating quantity of washing and rinsing compound to use and temperatures and pressures required for the effective operation of equipment.  Ensure all hazardous materials are stored properly and their Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are readily available.

-        Train workers to operate equipment and correct faulty techniques by demonstrations.

-        Prepare requisitions for laundry equipment, materials, and supplies.

-        Maintain records of production, supplies used, and employee time and attendance.

-        Perform any laundry operation where needed.

-       Schedule and conduct periodic meetings with staff to discuss staffing, production schedules, rates of production, and to resolve quality and production problems.

HEAD LAUNDRY SUPERVISOR

Perform all of the duties and responsibilities of a Laundry Supervisor, but in a State facility that is responsible for processing between 40 and 150 dry tons of laundry per month.   

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

LAUNDERER

Non-Competitive:  Ability to read and follow instructions.

SENIOR LAUNDERER

Non-Competitive:  Ability to read and follow instructions and one year of experience in a commercial or institutional laundry.

LAUNDRY SUPERVISOR

Non-Competitive:  Two years of satisfactory experience in a large commercial or institutional laundry, one year of which must have been as a lead worker or serving in a supervisory capacity over employees, inmates or working clients/consumers.

            HEAD LAUNDRY SUPERVISOR

Non-Competitive:  Three years of satisfactory experience in a large commercial or institutional laundry, one year of which must have been as a lead worker or serving in a supervisory capacity over employees, inmates, or clients/consumers.
