Classification Standard
These positions in the main office of the Department of Transportation provide professional earth engineering services to the Department. This includes prescribing methods of subsurface exploration and general supervision of subsurface exploration, laboratory analysis of soil samples to determine the characteristics of soils for various construction purposes, and advice on the foundation design of structures based upon subsurface exploration findings and laboratory analyses. In some instances, these engineers design foundations.
SENIOR SOILS ENGINEER performs soils engineering work of considerable difficulty and responsibility, applying the principles of soils mechanics to the design, construction, alteration, and maintenance of highways, bridges, buildings, and related structures: may supervise a unit within a section of the Soils Mechanics Bureau; provides advice to Transportation districts in problems connected with earth engineering; coordinates earth engineering work for several districts. QUALIFICATIONS: Professional engineer's license and: Promotion: Two years of permanent service in an engineering position allocated to Grade 19 or higher. Open Competitive: Two years of professional soils engineering experience.
ASSOCIATE SOILS ENGINEER serves as a section head in the Bureau of Soils Mechanics supervising field and laboratory earth engineering studies in relation to the design, construction, maintenance, and alteration of highways, bridges, buildings, and waterways, and assists in the evaluation and interpretation of such studies as related to the programs of the Department of Transportation. QUALIFICATIONS: Professional engineer's license and two years of permanent service in an engineering position allocated to Grade 23 or higher.
