Classification Specification

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Assistant Building Electrical Engineers design, redesign, and review electrical installations for new construction and alteration and rehabilitation of existing buildings and installations and review and approve contract specifications and estimates. They are classified primarily in the Office of General Services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

ASSISTANT BUILDING ELECTRICAL ENGINEER: second level for electrical design programs; works on projects of moderate complexity and more complex projects under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer; appointment requires experience in electrical engineering.

RELATED CLASSES

Higher levels in the Building Electrical Engineer Series design, redesign, and review larger and more complex electrical engineering projects and supervise other engineers, consultants, and technical support staff. Appointment requires a license and current registration as a professional engineer.

Senior Electronics Laboratory Engineers plan and direct the design, development, construction, and modification of precision electronic equipment and systems.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

ASSISTANT BUILDING ELECTRICAL ENGINEER: designs and redesigns building electrical installations and modifications, such as distribution systems, building and grounds illumination, alarm and communication systems, elevators, energy conservation systems, and other systems; conducts site surveys to determine site modifications required for projects; confers with other engineering and technical staff, contractors, and clients to determine new and revised installations required and the best and most cost efficient ways to meet these needs; computes required capacities and distribution systems, including future use and maintenance needs; prepares cost estimates for projects; reviews and approves contractors' plans for compliance with specifications and resolves problems with the conflicting requirements of various building components; prepares detailed design criteria, installation plans, and maintenance instructions; designs alterations in electrical systems and adapts plans to existing facilities and structural components; investigates reports of post installation equipment failures and determines modifications required, including inspection and maintenance requirements; inspects projects during and upon completion and observes operations for conformance to design and equipment specifications and operational and safety standards; prepares a variety of records and reports; and reviews the work of consultants assigned to building design and construction projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

ASSISTANT BUILDING ELECTRICAL ENGINEER

Promotion: one year of permanent service as a Junior Engineer, Junior Mechanical Estimator, Junior Mechanical Specifications Writer, Principal Drafting Technician, or Principal Drafting Technician (Electrical).

Open Competitive: Bachelor's Degree or higher in electrical engineering and one year of experience in the design and preparation of layouts for building electrical systems or six years of such experience.
