ASSISTANT PLUMBING ENGINEER, GRADE 20

Classification Standard

 

            Assistant Plumbing Engineers design and redesign internal plumbing for buildings, including fire protection sprinkler systems and layouts for bakery, kitchen, hospital, and laboratory equipment permanently connected to the premises.  The work does not include heating, outside sanitary plumbing, electrical, or structural design, although in designing plumbing for new buildings or in the design of changes in existing plumbing, plans must be coordinated with the heating, ventilating, electrical, and structural elements of designs of existing structures.  In some instances, these employees investigate operating difficulties in the field to determine means for their correction or to secure basic data for design.

 

            Assistant Plumbing Engineers furnish the fundamental specification data and check the final specifications for technical accuracy, and also participate in formulating standard specifications.

 

            ASSISTANT PLUMBING ENGINEER designs, redesigns and reviews plans for large and varied projects:  lays out plumbing for large institution buildings; reviews plans of outside architects and lays out changes in drawings for drafting technicians, considering such details as capacity of drainage pumps, conductors for storm water, presence of fire standpipes, provision for drainage, and provision for circulating water for generator; designs sprinkler systems for large buildings; reviews plans for gymnasiums and swimming pools; designs gasoline storage tanks and piping; has charge of field crews to secure basic data for design purposes, particularly for existing institutions acquired by the State for which there are no plans.  At this level are found positions with specialized responsibility for checking contractors’ equipment lists and comparing them with specifications, discussing discrepancies with contractors, inspecting samples and discussing new types of equipment with sales representative.  QUALIFICATIONS:  Promotion:  One year of permanent service in an engineering position allocated to Grade 15.  Open Competitive:  One year of engineering experience in the preparation and checking of plumbing layouts on building plans* and five additional years of any combination of the following:  (a) assisting in plumbing* engineering work; or (b) college study in engineering; or (c) technical institute or two-year study in applied science or a curriculum such as construction, highway technology, or pre-engineering.  One year of graduate study in mechanical engineering may be substituted for one year of the required professional experience.

 

*Two years of satisfactory mechanical engineering experience may be substituted for each year of this specific experience.
