Classification Standard

NATURE OF WORK

Drafting Aides assist technicians, architects or engineers by performing simple drafting work in the preparation of drawings, portraying architectural or engineering ideas and information.

Positions in this class are located in only a few agencies.

CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions of Drafting Aide are the entrance level for the Drafting Technician series.  Aides perform drafting work, typically segments of routine projects such as tracing and copying drawings involving few details of dimensions or notes, and preparing title headings by tracing or using lettering kits, designed to develop the incumbents’ drafting skills while performing productive assignments.  Typically, the drafting procedures, methods and techniques are specified and demonstrated, and detailed instructions are provided  for each assignment.  The work of the Drafting Aide is closely reviewed while in progress and when completed.

Drafting Technicians prepare drawings involving easily visualized details which fit familiar patterns.  Incumbents select and utilize appropriate drafting tools, instruments and materials, and follow accepted drafting procedures and methods.  Drafting Technicians perform recurring work of a routine nature with considerable independence while detailed instructions are provided for new or unusual assignments.

NATURE OF SUPERVISION

Drafting Aide is an entry level non-supervisory class.  Incumbents work under the supervision and direction of technicians, architects or engineers who make assignments, provide instruction, guidance and assistance in the performance of specific tasks.  The work of the Drafting Aide is reviewed for accuracy, technical content and adherence to instructions while in progress and upon completion.
