Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

Dentists are licensed to practice dentistry in New York State and perform a wide variety of activities related to restoring and maintaining individuals* dental health in accordance with Article 133 of the Education Law.

*Individual refers to a person who is being treated or cared for, and is used in place of patient, client, or other nomenclature specific to an agency.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

DENTIST 1: full performance level; functions as a general dental practitioner, performing the full range of professional dental tasks in connection with restoring and maintaining dental health.

DENTIST 2: supervisory level; functions as a general dental practitioner and also administers a facility(s) dental program, that includes the supervision of one or more subordinate dentists.

DENTIST 3: supervisory level; functions as a general dental practitioner and also administers the dental program for a group of facilities, that includes the supervision of several subordinate dentists.

Dentists 2 and 3 perform similar administrative duties; they perform employee counseling, consult on acute dental conditions referred by subordinate dentists, coordinate dental services with other clinical specialties, train staff, prepare budget, and order and maintain dental equipment and supplies.  However, the latter’s responsibilities are more extensive because of the incumbent’s responsibility for a dental program of greater size reaching a larger number of individuals and involving a larger professional and paraprofessional staff.
