BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Senior Operating Room Technicians are technical support positions that prepare patients for surgery, prepare operating rooms, assist in operating room activities, and supervise technical support staff. They are classified only in hospitals of the State University and the Department of Health.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

SENIOR OPERATING ROOM TECHNICIAN: non-competitive jurisdictional class; supervises and trains technical support staff; assures that operating room is properly equipped and maintained; assists in surgery by performing the more routine tasks, such as maintaining aseptic conditions and handling instruments to surgeons.

RELATED CLASSES

Operating Room Technicians perform a variety of routine tasks under close supervision while setting up and assisting in an operating room and preparing patients for surgery.

Hospital Attendants attend to the daily living and personal hygiene needs of patients, transport patients, and perform housekeeping and cleaning activities.

Hospital Clinical Assistants observe patients, perform simple treatment procedures, attend to needs of patients, and perform some housekeeping activities.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

SENIOR OPERATING ROOM TECHNICIAN: supervises operating room technicians and other technical support staff; trains staff by assigning duties and instructing staff in proper work techniques and procedures; plans and organizes work schedules and assigns staff to assist in surgeries; manages an operating room unit by assuring that supplies are present and properly maintained, cleaning operating rooms and equipment, assembling and sterilizing equipment and supplies, cleaning and checking sterilizing apparatus, and obtaining and laying out surgical instruments, sterile packs, sponges, and other required equipment and supplies for surgical procedures; accounts for all supplies, surgical instruments, and equipment used during surgical procedures; assists in preparing patients for surgery by cleaning, shaving, and sterilizing operating field, assisting in placing and positioning patient on operating table, and controlling movement of patient while under anesthesia; assists in surgery by handing equipment and supplies to surgeons, connecting equipment, controlling location of contaminated instruments and supplies, preparing and labeling specimens, and assisting surgeons in procedures; and plans and prepares for emergency scheduling.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

SENIOR OPERATING ROOM TECHNICIAN

Non-competitive: one year of service as an Operating Room Technician or as a clinical technician with closely related experience and completion of a course in operating room techniques.
