Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

 

            Secure Care Treatment Aides treat and care for patients with mental illness, or with emotional or social behavioral problems who are manipulative, treatment resistant, and/or dangerous to themselves or others.  Incumbents provide a safe, secure, and stable environment within which patients can receive the intensive care and behavioral interactions needed for stabilization and treatment. 

 

          These positions are classified in the secure intensive treatment units and forensic facilities of the Office of Mental Health (OMH). 

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

          SECURE CARE TREATMENT AIDE 1: full performance level; under the supervision of a Secure Care Treatment Aide 2, treats and cares for patients within an OMH secure intensive treatment unit or forensic facility. 

 

          SECURE CARE TREATMENT AIDE 2: supervisory level; supervises multiple Secure Care Treatment Aides 1; and treats and cares for the most difficult and dangerous patients.

 

RELATED CLASSES

 

           Developmental Disabilities Secure Care Treatment Aides perform duties similar to Secure Care Treatment Aides, but are located in secure treatment centers of the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities.  

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

          SECURE CARE TREATMENT AIDE 1

 

Monitors patients to prevent them from behaving in a way that is dangerous to themselves or others.

 

·       Observes patients in restraint or seclusion and follows prescribed procedures in caring for and treating such patients.

·       Applies therapeutic techniques to stabilize patients.

·       To the extent qualified, may pass or assist in passing medications to patients.

·       Attends to the personal needs of patients who cannot take care of themselves; and assists and instructs patients in attending to personal care tasks concerning hygiene, grooming, nutrition, and daily living.

·       Observes high-risk patients closely; and records frequent notes on patients’ behavior.

·       Communicates with parents, guardians, or other stakeholders to obtain general information about patients. 

·       Applies physical restraints to patients as ordered by a physician.

 

Maintains order and a secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff through the application of therapeutic methods and postures.

 

·       Orients new patients to the established policies and procedures of the secure intensive treatment unit or forensic facility.

·       Conducts periodic checks to account for each patient as required by facility policies and procedures.

·       Escorts patients to activities and appointments on and off facility grounds, including to and from meals, and accounts for all eating utensils before patients leave the dining area.

·       Assists and encourages patients to participate in recreational activities and other rehabilitation goals to enhance recovery and draw patients into fuller participation in family and community life.  

·       Observes patients during visits with friends and relatives to ensure that no contraband is provided.

 

May participate on treatment teams and assist in carrying out treatment plans.

 

·       Follows instructions and guidelines provided by clinical staff and coaches patients through a series of structured exercises to support a therapy program.

·       Teaches and reinforces communication techniques to meet patients’ needs.

·       Observes patients’ behavior and responses to treatment and rehabilitation programs, support services, and medication; and reports observations verbally to a treatment team member or in writing on a prescribed form. 

·       Attends treatment team meetings and provides input on treatment plans.

 

          SECURE CARE TREATMENT AIDE 2

 

In addition to performing any of the tasks and activities of a Secure Care Treatment Aide 1 above, performs the full range of supervisory duties over multiple Secure Care Treatment Aides 1, including subordinate staff assignments, time and attendance, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

          SECURE CARE TREATMENT AIDE 1

 

Open Competitive: A high school or equivalent diploma and one year of direct patient care experience working with individuals diagnosed with mental illness, or with emotional or social behavior problems. 

 

          SECURE CARE TREATMENT AIDE 2

 

Promotion: One year of service as a Secure Care Treatment Aide 1.
