HOSPITAL PHYSICAL THERAPY AIDE, GRADE 9

Classification Standard

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

            Hospital Physical Therapy Aides perform a variety of physical and clerical tasks to aid Physical Therapists and/or Physical Therapy Assistants in the treatment of patients in an ambulatory setting.  Positions with this title are located in the hospitals operated by the State University of New York.

           

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

            Non-competitive; performs all duties under the direction and supervision of a licensed and currently registered Physical Therapist.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

־         Assists Physical Therapists and/or Physical Therapy Assistants with treatment of patients as necessary.

 

־         Identifies changes in status of a patient prior to or during treatment and reports that change immediately to the appropriate staff for evaluation.

 

־         Assists with maintenance range of motion exercises and exercises to maintain strength and endurance in patients without related pathology.

 

־         Ambulates patients who are on a maintenance physical therapy program.

 

־         Provides superficial hot and cold applications.

 

־         Sets up for each patient’s therapy; keeps treatment area, equipment and supplies clean and organized.

 

־         Orders depleted supplies.

 

־         Transports patients safely to and from physical therapy.

 

־         Keeps equipment closet in order.

 

־         Changes beds and stacks linens, as needed.

 

־         Cleans and disinfects beds and equipment as required.

 

־         Issues and provides minor repair of wheelchairs and devices.

 

־         Performs clerical duties as required such as answering the phone, billing and filing, filling out insurance forms and other paperwork.  Inputs data into computer as necessary.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

            Two years of experience in direct patient care.  Related education beyond the high school level may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
