SENIOR ENGINEERING MATERIALS CHEMIST, GRADE 18

Classification Standard

 

            These employees perform tests, utilizing chemical and physical means, of bituminous materials, paint, lubricating and fuel oil, glass, reflective materials, and other construction material.  The work includes the physical testing of materials, using precision laboratory equipment.  These latter tests are often preliminary to or associated with chemical analysis of the material.

 

            SENIOR ENGINEERING MATERIALS CHEMIST performs the more complex chemical and physical tests of a quantitative and qualitative nature on engineering materials:  makes tests of a chemical and physical nature on engineering materials; enters test computations on log sheets and reports test findings to higher ranking employees; instructs and supervises lower ranking personnel in methods of setting up apparatus, of testing materials, and on other matters; after discussing general methods of approach to a problem, devises new test procedures and apparatus; acts as a specialist on various materials; aids in preparing new and revising existing specifications by performing experimental tests and reporting findings; under detailed instructions, attempts to find materials adaptable to State use by testing various constituents and mixtures of the same; cooperates with outside testing agencies in making experimental analyses of materials.  QUALIFICATIONS:  One year of permanent service as Engineering Materials Analyst.
