Classification Standard

 

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

Construction Equipment Operators (Heavy) operate heavy construction equipment used in the maintenance and repair of roads, bridges and other agency facilities.

 

These positions are only classified at the Canal Corporation and Thruway Authority.

 

 

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

 

CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (HEAVY): non-competitive; operates gasoline or diesel driven heavy construction equipment.

         

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

 

During snow and ice control operations, operates equipment such as rotary snow plows; four-wheel drive trucks; graders; mobile excavators; and crawler-type tractors with attachments.  Supervises and/or acts as a member of a crew engaged in pavement patching; crack pouring; and repair of signs, fences, rails, delineators, and light posts.

Keeps records of supplies and materials; truck reports; and other reports, as required.

Assists in traffic control at accident scenes.  Operates all equipment as assigned and utilize all hand tools normally stocked in tool complement.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

Non-Competitive: possession of a valid New York State Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) AND one year of experience operating heavy construction equipment.
