BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS         

 

            A Sign Crew Supervisor is a working supervisor of a work crew performing traffic control and roadside signage installation, maintenance, and repair activities.  These positions only exist in the Department of Transportation.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

            Sign Crew Supervisors are working supervisors of a small to medium sized work crew performing traffic control and roadside signage installation, maintenance and repair activities.  Incumbents may perform and/or supervise the performance of the full range of snow and ice removal activities for a small to medium size work crew. 

 

RELATED CLASSES

 

Highway Maintenance Workers 1 and 2, Grades 8 and 10 operate a variety of self-propelled and other equipment in the maintenance and repair of highway pavements, shoulders, roadsides and drainage, traffic signs and pavement markings, and in the control of snow and ice.  In addition, they may be assigned a variety of maintenance tasks in support of the bridge and facility maintenance programs. They also perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and assist mechanics in more extensive equipment maintenance and repair.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

A Sign Crew Supervisor, as a working supervisor, may perform all the tasks and activities of a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 which are described in the Classification Standard for Highway Maintenance Worker 1.

 

Supervises a work crew in performance of a variety of construction and maintenance tasks.

 

·      Interprets the MUTCD manual to determine correct sign size and placement.

 

·      Schedules work projects and makes individual work assignments to crew members based on priorities.

 

·      Orally instructs crew members in the activities and tasks to be performed and answers their questions concerning work procedures.

 

·      Provides and explains simple written guidelines for work if they are available.

 

·      Observes work in progress and inspects completed work to ensure adherence to instructions, guidelines and schedules.

 

·      Maintains records of work performed, materials and labor as part of a manual or automated maintenance management system.

 

·      Has contact with the general public both in person and via telephone.

 

May work with contractors in planning and scheduling sign installations, including lane closures and inspection of work in progress and completed work.

 

Performs all tasks related to a highway maintenance residency sign maintenance program.

 

·        Maintains both field and residency stock inventory using either a manual or automated inventory system.  Maintenance of an automated system may include data entry, edit, and/or correction, data retrieval, reporting, and order creation/inventory replenishment.   

 

·        Conducts periodic sign reflectivity inspections.

 

May operate self-propelled machinery such as cars, trucks, construction equipment and riding mowers; non-self-propelled machines such as highway paint stripers, compressors, generators and bituminous heaters, and use hand and power tools such as axes, shovels, chain saws and power mowers.

 

May perform or supervise the performance of the full range of snow and ice removal activities for a small to medium size crew.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SUPERVISION EXCERCISED

 

            Sign Crew Supervisors supervise work crews; they assign work, provide instructions, advice and written guidelines, if available, and regularly observe the work in progress and work which is completed for adherence to instructions and schedules.  Sign Crew Supervisors submit brief written reports to their supervisors of the work performed and materials, equipment and labor used.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion: Possession of a New York State Class B Commercial Drivers License with DOT-specified endorsements and must meet either A or B qualification listed below:

 

A.     One year of sign crew experience and one year of permanent service in a title in the Highway Maintenance Division allocated at Grade 8 or above

OR

B.  One year of experience as a lead worker or supervisor in a Highway Maintenance position allocated at Grade 10 or above.
