Classification Standard

NATURE OF WORK

PARK SANITATION SUPERINTENDENT, under general direction, typically from a Regional Park Maintenance Supervisor 2, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, and sanitary facilities and for general sanitary conditions within a State Park and Recreation Region in the Executive Department, Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation:  supervises the operation, maintenance and repair of all water treatment and sewage disposal systems within the Region; personally performs the more difficult repairs and adjustments; supervises or personally performs the taking of prescribed tests to insure the proper treatment of water and sewage; regularly inspects swimming pools, bathing areas, concessions and sanitary facilities to insure that proper sanitary conditions are maintained; supervises the activities of water and sewage treatment plant operators and maintenance personnel; reviews plans for new park facilities and the renovation of existing facilities and provides suggestions for changes to achieve appropriate sanitary standards.  Positions in this class are distinguished from positions of Head Sewage Plant Operator by their responsibility for water treatment facilities and other sanitary facilities in addition to responsibility for a large sewage disposal plant.  These positions exist only in the Long Island State Park and Recreation Region and the Palisades Interstate Park Region.  QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of the appropriate water treatment plant operator’s certificate required and issued by the New York State Public Health Council and the appropriate sewage treatment plant operator’s certificate required and issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and one year of satisfactory experience with responsibility for general park sanitation.
