BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
Toll Electronic Systems Technicians install and maintain electrical and electronic toll collection, traffic information, and related equipment. These positions are classified only at the New York State Thruway Authority.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
TOLL ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN: under the general direction of a Maintenance Supervisor 1 or 2 (Toll Equipment), incumbents repair electronic toll collection and audit systems and equipment on an assigned section of the Thruway system.

Traffic Systems Technicians perform technical work requiring specialized training and experience to install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of electrical systems and electronic and computer equipment utilized to monitor and control traffic systems on the State highway system.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
TOLL ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN: installs and repairs toll collection equipment and systems; installs, maintains, and tests various ITS elements such as Dynamic Message Signs, the Highway Advisory Radio System, Traffic Data Systems, Weather Information Systems, Closed Circuit Television Cameras and traffic control warning signs; installs, maintains, and tests various other equipment such as electronic time clocks, network ethernet data converters, switches and hubs; operates a variety of technician hand tools and electronic test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, radio frequency (RF) power meters, fiber optic light meters and visual fault locators; implements a preventive maintenance schedule designed to prevent equipment failure, and to maintain optimal systems operation; overhauls equipment taken out of service for repairs; modifies equipment and assists in testing modifications to determine practicability; and maintains work records, requisition supplies, and prepares service reports.
Independence of Operation
In addition to a regular maintenance schedule, incumbents of these positions are subject to 24/7 call-in emergencies. Additionally, while incumbents may work with other technicians and maintenance staff, these positions are required to work on off ladders up to 14 feet, on lift platforms 25-30 feet high, and on buckets attached to trucks up to 65 feet high. Additionally, incumbents climb stairs to work on large over-the-road VMS signs up to 20 feet and you may be required to work on catwalks under and on structures over bridges, climb stairs over open water and/or work on the top of 20-foot-high toll canopies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Open Competitive: three years of experience in the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of complex electrical/electronic equipment such as computer hardware, network hardware, or similar equipment involving work with electrical/electronic control circuits; OR military training/rating in an electronics field including completion of an electronic rating school program AND one year of the experience described above; OR successful completion of a two-year traineeship.
