MOTOR EQUIPMENT SPECIALIST, GRADE 18

Classification Standard

 

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

          Motor Equipment Specialists develops statewide specifications for new and replacement vehicles and equipment, as well as modifications for existing equipment. Incumbents coordinate requirements and specification information within the Department of Transportation and with other agencies; research component failure trends; coordinate campaigns for federally regulated and mandated manufacturers’ recalls for product corrections and modifications, and for voluntary manufacturers’ recalls for product improvements; and resolve warranty issues with manufacturers and service providers.

 

          These positions are classified only at the Department of Transportation (DOT).

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

          MOTOR EQUIPMENT SPECIALIST: observes, checks, and evaluates equipment during manufacturing for compliance to specifications; supervises testing of new and prototype equipment and evaluates the results; researches publications and reports for new and developmental equipment; and designs modifications to equipment to provide for the safety of personnel and property as well as more efficient operation and maintenance.

         

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

Works with program areas who use equipment to evaluate equipment needs, reviews utilization reports and determine replacement criteria using the Fleet Maintenance Information Systems. (FMIS)

 

Works with vendors to obtain equipment options and new technologies on the market that will meet department needs.

 

Creates requisitions, purchase orders for new equipment, including vendor information, make and model, funding codes, and justifications for purchase.

 

Tracks status of equipment orders through final in-service date.

 

Works to gather needed specifications for purchase contracts.

 

Works with vendors to obtain quotes.

 

Oversees the new equipment inspection program which includes performing a thorough inspection on new equipment and trucks to be added to the fleet.

 

Coordinates the inspections of new equipment with the vendor, agency safety program, and agency program areas that utilize the equipment so all required parties are represented at the delivery inspection.

 

Coordinates the equipment diagnostic computers on a statewide level, including working with the Fleet personnel across the state that administer the diagnostic computer program, for proper computer utilization, functionality and needed reports.

 

Oversees the logistic cell within the Incident Command System. This includes monitoring and updating NY Responds, Verizon GPS for rolling assets, extracts data for equipment and personnel being utilized in emergency storm response, compiles data listed above for reports and documentation for the Incident Commander.

         

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Open Competitive: six years of experience in the fields of motor equipment maintenance, vehicle modification or automotive component testing.

 

Promotion: one year of service as a Maintenance Supervisor 2 (Motor Equipment).
