Classification Standard

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

          Incumbents assist in the maintenance of aircrafts, install and/or replace aircraft equipment, and perform routine checks on aircraft equipment to ensure its proper functioning and structural integrity. Positions in this title are not required to supervise.

 

          These positions are only classified at the Division of State Police, within the Aviation Unit.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

AIRCRAFT MECHANIC: non-competitive; non-supervisory class; reports to an Aircraft Maintenance Supervisor.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

          Under the general direction of an Aircraft Maintenance Supervisor, maintains helicopter and fixed wing fleet in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations; performs changes to aircraft such as engines, propellers, control surfaces and accessories; disassembles engines and checks parts for wear, warping and other defects in accordance with FAA regulations; examines external appearance of aircraft and engines and listens to them while operating to diagnose malfunctions; and maintains close liaison with all pilots regarding the condition of all Division aircrafts.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Non-Competitive: Possession of an FAA license for airframe and power plant maintenance, and possession of an FAA license for avionics inspection and maintenance.
