Classification Standard

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

General Mechanics Trades Training Program are responsible for providing all training to inmate participants within their respective trade.  Incumbents of these positions train inmates, review their performance, provide supplementary vocational training when necessary, and arrange for the provision of necessary academic training.  The ultimate proficiency of inmate workers upon completion of the training program is at the semiskilled performance level.

 

These positions are classified at the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS).

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

GENERAL MECHANIC TRADES TRAINING PROGRAM: full performance level; supervise inmates; provides on-the-job training and supplemental vocational training to inmates.

 

RELATED CLASSES

 

Equipment Operator Instructors train and certify equipment operators and their supervisors.

 

Vocational Instructors, utilizing both professional and practical training and experience, plan lessons and instruct and evaluate the performance and progress of learners who are in the charge of a State agency.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

Develops a specific program within trade area for each inmate assigned and reviews all available information concerning experience and skill level of the inmate.

 

Discusses activates each inmate has performed in the past to determine existing skill levels.

 

Verifies claimed skill levels within the trade area through onsite testing and observation.

 

Identifies areas in which an inmates academic deficiency prevents them from engaging in certain parts of the training and arranges appropriate corrective action through the supervisor.

 

Provides basic orientation to program and activities that will be performed by inmates.

 

Provides instruction to inmates and reviews their progress within the program.

 

Establishes daily assignments of inmates.

 

 

 

 

In addition to the activities peculiar to the training of offenders, subject positions will perform all activities normal to their trade specialty.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:  one year of experience as a skilled building trades journeyman, subsequent to a completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

 

Non Competitive:  two years of experience as a skilled building trades journeyman, after completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
