Classification Standard

 

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

Positions in this title are responsible for providing all training to inmate participants within their respective trade.  Incumbents of these positions train inmates, review their performance, provide supplementary vocational training when necessary, and arrange for the provision of necessary academic training.  The ultimate proficiency of inmate workers upon completion of the training program is at the semiskilled performance level.

 

These positions are classified at the Department of Correctional Services (DOCS).  All incumbents at DOCS assist in the total care and confinement of inmates, sentenced to the custody of the Department and perform various duties and functions in conjunction with the overall operation of a facility and/or location to which they are assigned.

 


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

GENERAL MECHANIC TRADES TRAINNG PROGRAM: full performance; supervisory (over inmates); provides on-the-job training and supplemental vocational training to inmates.

 

RELATED CLASSES

 

Equipment Operator Instructors train and certify equipment operators and their supervisors to operate a wide variety of self-propelled equipment and to prepare operators to obtain a Commercial Drivers License.  Positions are classified only in the Department of Transportation.

 

Vocational Instructors, utilizing both professional and practical training and experience, plan lessons and instruct and evaluate the performance and progress of learners who are in the charge of a State agency, in vocational and trades specialties.  Instruction includes a verbal and written presentation of the theoretical along with demonstrations of practical applications of that theory.

 


ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

Develop a specific program within trade area for each inmate assigned and review all available information concerning past experience and skill level of the inmate.

 

On an ongoing basis, provide instruction to inmates and review their progress within the program.

 

Establish daily assignments of inmates.

 

In addition to the activities peculiar to the training of inmates, subject positions will perform all activities normal to their trade specialty.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:  one year of experience as a skilled Building Trades Journeyman, subsequent to a completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

 

Non-Competitive:  two years of experience as a skilled building trades journeyman, subsequent to completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
