Classification Standard

NATURE OF WORK

A Steel Fabricator performs skilled work in the fabrication and repair of lock gates, valves, smokestacks, tapered pipes and other heavy duty metal products using drill presses, riveters, bending bars, lathes, welding equipment and other fabrication tools.

Positions in this class are found in the New York State Canal Corporation.

CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

A Steel Fabricator, as a skilled crafts person, plans and lays out work and determines proper tools, materials and sequence of operations to complete required work. Incumbents set up and operate a variety of tools in the fabrication and repair of heavy duty metal items using materials such as structural steel, other metals and alloys.  Steel Fabricators may work from drawings, blueprints, written instructions or oral instructions.  They may, at times, supervise semiskilled and relatively unskilled workers.

Other skilled crafts persons which are responsible for the repair and construction of metal items include Machinists and Welders.  A Machinist performs skilled machine shop work in the construction and repair of metal parts, tools and fixtures, operating lathes, drill presses, drilling machines and other machine tools.  Welders work with a variety of metals such as steel, iron, brass and aluminum to repair and construct equipment such as deck plates, bridge frames, metal pipes, engine blocks, etc. using electric arc and gas welding equipment.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES, TASKS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Incumbents fabricate and repair a variety of items from structural steel and other metals and alloys from drawings, blueprints, written instructions and oral instructions using equipment such as drill presses, riveters, bending brakes, rolls, forges, lathes and welders.

· Repair boilers and canal vessels by inserting patches and stay bolts and by retubing boiler coils.

· Fabricate tapered pipes to connect rectangular and round openings and smokestacks for canal vessels.

· Fabricate and repair lock gates and valves to insure integrity of locks.

· Manufacture and repair A-frames for derrick by riveting and welding parts together and welding cracks.

· Fabricate shore pipe and pontoons used in dredging operations.

· May fabricate steel structural members for bridges.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

The nature of a Steel Fabricator's activities generally restricts relationships to employees in the same organizational unit including crafts persons in other trades. As assigned, Steel Fabricators may supervise various lower level positions, orally assigning work and providing oral and written instructions.

NATURE OF SUPERVISION

A Steel Fabricator is generally supervised by a Canal Maintenance Shop Supervisor 1 or 2 who determines work priorities, the nature and extent of the work to be performed and furnishes materials and equipment.  In the absence of such direction, a Steel Fabricator may set priorities, requisition needed materials and determine the work that has to be done.  Although the work of a Steel Fabricator is periodically inspected, incumbents are expected to work with considerable independence as is typical of a crafts person.

As assigned, a Steel Fabricator may supervise subordinate maintenance employees by making assignments, giving instructions, observing and inspecting the work performed to insure that instructions have been followed and the quality of work is satisfactory.

MACHINES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Steel Fabricators use machines, tools and equipment of the Steel Fabrication trade including drill presses, riveters, welding equipment, lathes, etc.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

· Working knowledge of steel fabrication methods, materials, tools and equipment.

· Working knowledge of the mathematics of the Steel Fabrication trade.

· Working knowledge of the physical characteristics of commonly used metals and alloys.

· Working knowledge of safety procedures and practices related to the use of tools and equipment.

· Ability to use tools, materials and equipment of the Steel Fabrication trade.

· Ability to plan and lay out work.

· Ability to understand work from written and oral instructions, schematic drawings and blueprints.

· Ability to stand and bend for long periods of time; to climb and do moderately heavy lifting.

· As assigned, the ability to train and supervise others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Four years of full-time experience under a skilled journey level Steel Fabricator which provided training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in the steel fabricating trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in steel fabricating work at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience and training on a year-for-year basis. A valid motor vehicle or commercial drivers license appropriate to the vehicles and equipment operated may be required.
