Classification Standard

         

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

General Industrial Training Supervisors are responsible for a specialized manufacturing unit consistent with the parenthetic title assigned to each position.  They direct the production of a quality products at the­ lowest possible cost in accordance with predetermined delivery schedules.  They are classified for industrial programs at the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), known currently as DOCCS Industries, under the brand name of Corcraft. 

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

GENERAL INDUSTRIAL TRAINING SUPERVISOR: second supervisory level; under the general direction of the Assistant Industrial Superintendent, supervises a group of Industrial Training Supervisors and inmate workers; plans, schedules, and coordinates manufacturing operations for their staff; implements changes in manufacturing operations; and prepares a variety of reports and records.  Parenthetic titles indicate the positions area of specialization. 

 

RELATED CLASSES

 

          Industrial Superintendents manage all manufacturing operations for a correctional facility.

 

Industrial Training Supervisors oversee operations in a specialized area of manufacturing, production, or industrial service and train and supervise correctional facility inmates assigned to that specialized area. 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

Develop and maintain industrial training programs.

 

Supervise all Industrial Training Supervisors and inmate workers in a particular industry or groups of industries.

 

Establish manufacturing schedules.

 

·       Determine which product or group of products is to be manufactured based on customer orders and stock requirements.

 

·       Verify availability of raw materials.  Check other required components and supplies and ensure that inventories are balanced to maintain production.

 

·       Develop a work schedule that will satisfy orders and meet specified delivery dates.

 

In conjunction with the Production Control Manager, is responsible for all production control functions at the institution level.

 

·       Supervise and review the preparation of production control documentation geared for the orderly and efficient operation of all shops.

 

·       Plan for the timely shipment of finished products and the storage of finished goods, for stock, or customer orders to be delivered at a later date.

 

·       Develop methods for the utilization of materials that would ordinarily become scrap and/or plan for removal of scrap.

 

Maintain quality control standards and procedures.

 

Supervise the maintenance and repair of machines and physical plant in all shops under jurisdiction.

 

Assist in the development of new or modified shop layouts or methods and procedures of manufacturing, and supervise their implementation.

 

Recommend participation in training courses and seminars; current trade literature, etc., to further the development of Industrial Training Supervisor under their supervision.

 

Conduct time studies to evaluate the efficiency of various shop operations.

 

Prepare cost analyses for Correctional Industries products to assist in establishing a fair market price.

 

Create reports including weekly payroll, production, raw material usage, machine usage, and bills of material.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion: One year of permanent service as an Industrial Training Supervisor 2 or 3 (all parenthetics).
