Classification Specification

 

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

            Industrial Training Supervisors 2 and 3 oversee production operations in a specialized area of manufacturing, as indicated by the parenthetic title assigned to each position, and train and supervise prison inmates assigned to the manufacturing program.  They are classified only in industrial programs at correctional facilities operated by the Department of Correctional Services.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

            INDUSTRIAL TRAINING SUPERVISOR 2 AND 3:  manage production for a product or group of products; train and supervise inmates; all positions are classified with a parenthetic title indicating the specialization; parenthetic classes are assigned to the 3 level based on the skill levels required for these specialties.

RELATED CLASSES

 

            General Industrial Training Supervisors supervise a group of Industrial Training Supervisors and inmate workers, plan, schedule, and coordinate manufacturing operations for their staff, implement changes in manufacturing operations, and prepare a variety of reports and records.

 

            Industrial Superintendents manage all manufacturing operations for a correctional facility.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

            INDUSTRIAL TRAINING SUPERVISOR 2 AND 3:  train inmates to work in the shop, including explaining work requirements, shop and departmental rules, safety practices, and general production and behavioral expectations, providing orientation, and demonstrating and explaining the use and maintenance of equipment, tools, and materials; observe work in progress to assure that inmates are performing it correctly and meeting acceptable quality and production standards; plan production and schedule production and inmate assignments to meet production goals and deadlines; supervise inmates in performing their work activities and in assuring acceptable behavior, including verifying the attendance and location of inmates, reassigning inmates to meet production needs, evaluating inmate performance and preparing reports, evaluating and counseling inmates, and assisting Correction Officers in maintaining security and safety; determine inventory, equipment, and material needs for production goals and orders and restocks inventory; track movement of product from start to finish; sign out and secure all tools and materials needed and account for all issues; establish maintenance and repair schedules for all equipment and arrange downtime to meet the schedules; calibrate and adjust equipment to meet manufacturer specifications; check cleanliness of work areas and supervise inmates in maintaining them; prepare a variety of reports and records, such as performance and behavior reports, production records, injury reports, attendance records, tool and material inventory, purchase orders, and inmate payroll; and recommend changes in equipment, methods, and production standards.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

            INDUSTRIAL TRAINING SUPERVISOR 2 AND 3

 

Open Competitive: high school diploma or equivalent and five years experience in a manufacturing process or trade, including one year of supervisory experience, with three years experience in the specialty parenthetic.
