Classification Standard

 

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

          Conservation Security Workers are assigned to the Division of Operations, and provide security by patrolling assigned areas at facilities such as campgrounds and day use areas; and inform patrons about rules and regulations at facilities.   

These positions are non-competitive and are classified only at the Department of Environmental Conservation.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

          CONSERVATION SECURITY WORKER: non-competitive; seasonal; enforces rules and regulations defined in the Park Ranger Manual.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

CONSERVATION SECURITY WORKER: reporting to non-competitive Conservation Operations Supervisors 1, inspects department facilities and equipment and reports any hazards or deficient conditions; encourages proper use of facilities; when necessary, contacts law enforcement for assistance to monitor or stop illegal, destructive, or unsafe activities; greets campers; operates computer for registering campers; handles camping permits and revenue accounting; provides the public with information and literature and answers questions about the facility and surroundings; prepares reports and maintains records for daily activities, public use, maintenance needs, and law enforcement; keeps supervisors informed of activities in the facility; assists law enforcement at the scenes of emergencies and other incidents; and performs other campground tasks assigned by the supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Non-Competitive:  possess and maintain a motor vehicle operator’s license AND have completed either a one year course at a ranger school, or similar learning institution, in a park or natural resource management, law enforcement or similar curriculum; OR have one season of recreational facility experience involving contact with the public or in the enforcement of laws, rules and regulations; OR one year of working or interacting with the public in a recreational facility; OR one year of environmental experience in a remote wilderness setting; OR have six months experience in law enforcement, security services employment, military service or similar experience actively involved with public contact or in the enforcement of laws, policies, and rules and regulations; OR have completed at least 15 college credit hours in criminal justice or a related field.
