Welcome to the Veterans Temporary Hiring Program
On January 20, 2014 the Executive Law was amended to add Chapter 17-A, also known as the Veterans Employment Act. Pursuant to Section 369 of the Executive Law, it will be the policy of the state to use honorably discharged veterans for temporary appointments in state agencies rather than utilizing temporary employment service companies. It is also the responsibility of the Department of Civil Service to create a veteran temporary hiring list. A state agency must select a veteran from the veteran temporary hiring list when making a temporary appointment provided the veteran possesses the applicable skills needed for the temporary assignment.
Opportunities for temporary employment exist in a breadth of titles. However, for the purposes of implementing the Veterans Employment Act, a group of titles have initially been identified as those that offer the greatest number of temporary opportunities under this program.
The Department of Civil Service is hosting the Veterans Temporary Hiring Program through which qualifying veterans may:
- Indicate interest in temporary employment by providing contact information; academic background; occupational, employment and geographic preferences.
- Upload a resume.
- Upload a DD-214.
