Minimum Qualifications

On or before December 11, 2010, you must have:

For Number 25-408: two years of experience in commercial, industrial, or institutional photography including taking, editing and printing digital photographs, and using and maintaining digital asset management software.

For Number 25-409: three years of experience in commercial, industrial, or institutional photography including taking, editing and printing digital photographs, and using and maintaining digital asset management software. One year of this experience must include shooting, editing, and outputting video.

For Number 25-410: four years of experience in commercial, industrial, or institutional photography including taking, editing and printing digital photographs, and using and maintaining digital asset management software. One year of this experience must include shooting, editing, and outputting video. One of the four years of experience MUST include managerial oversight of a photographic program or photographic services. For the purposes of this examination, "managerial oversight" must have included the supervision of at least one photographer.

Substitution: An associate's or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university in Photography may be substituted for two years of general experience. It cannot be substituted for managerial oversight experience for No. 25-410.

Notes

  1. Your degree must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. You must pay the required evaluation fee. If you are applying on the Internet, you must mail the independent verification of equivalency to the NYS Department of Civil Service, Alfred E. Smith State Office Building, Albany, New York 12239. Attention: S2CMH.
  2. If you expect to meet the educational requirements by June 30, 2010, you can be admitted to the written test but you cannot be considered for appointment until you submit proof of successful completion of the educational requirements to the appointing authority.
  3. If you do not receive a confirmation number after submitting your online application, your application was NOT processed.
  4. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  5. New York State residence is not required.

Duties

As a Photographer 2, you would perform a variety of photographic work involving the use of standard digital cameras and a more complex variety of photographic techniques and equipment, including the effective use of off-camera flash and studio lighting techniques. You would also convert film to a digital format, prepare digital output for websites, manage digital assets, and maintain a digital photographic and film negative archive.

As a Photographer 3, in addition to performing any of the duties described for Photographer 2, you would perform and supervise traditional and/or digital photographic work and might be responsible for an agency's photographic program, which includes shooting, editing, and outputting video.

As a Photographer 4, in addition to performing any of the duties described for Photographer 3, you would supervise and direct a comprehensive photographic program for an agency, which includes shooting, editing, and outputting video.

Subject of Examination

There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as: For Examination Numbers

1. Keeping simple inventory records - These questions test your skill in following instructions in order to keep accurate records of different materials received and distributed from a central location. You will be given written directions for a set of records and forms on which records are kept. You are to complete these forms from partially completed records or from lists of materials, then answer questions about the completed records. You may be asked to compute total costs from quantities and unit prices. The ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide will be required. Specific knowledge of record keeping systems and techniques will not be needed. X    
2. Advising and interacting with others - These questions test for the ability to interact with other people, to gather and present information, and to provide assistance and advice in a courteous and professional manner. X X X
3. Basic concepts in digital photography - These questions test for knowledge of principles, practices, and equipment used in digital photography. Questions may include such topics as camera controls and functions; capturing, manipulating, and storing images; advanced photographic techniques; and creating and maintaining a multimedia archive. 4. Photography - These questions test for knowledge of the techniques, terminology, materials, and equipment used in taking photographs. Questions may include such topics as lighting, composition, photo processing and editing, and care of photographic equipment. X X X
5. Design and management of digital photographic and videographic projects or assignments - These questions will test for knowledge of techniques, terminology, and equipment related to the production of photographic and videographic projects, and the ability to provide oversight and technical direction to such projects. Questions may cover such aspects as digital image capture and enhancement, conversion of multimedia materials to or from a digitized format, and preparation and editing of images for videos or other presentational formats.   X X
6. Supervision and training - These questions test for the knowledge required by a supervisor to set goals, plan and organize work, train workers in how to do their jobs, and direct workers towards meeting established goals. The supervisory questions cover such areas as assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, maintaining work quality, motivating employees, increasing efficiency, and dealing with problems that may arise on the job. The training questions cover such areas as determining the necessity for training, selecting appropriate training methods, and evaluating the effectiveness of training.   X X

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.

Admission to Examination

Notice to appear for the test may be conditional as review of applications may not be made until after the test. Multiple Examinations Scheduled for the Same Day

With the exception of written tests announced by New York City, if you have applied to take a written test announced by a local jurisdiction (county, town, city) scheduled to be held on the same test date as this written test, you must call 518-474-6470 in the Albany area or toll free at 1-877-697-5627 [press 2, then press 1], no later than two weeks before the test date, to make arrangements for taking all tests at one test site. All tests will be held at the state examination center.

Cell Phones or Electronic/Communication Devices at the Test Site

Do not bring cell phones, beepers, headphones, or any electronic or other communication devices to the test site. The use of such devices at the test site in the test room, hallways, restrooms, building, grounds, or other areas could result in your disqualification.
