**Due to the size of the candidate population for this test date, you may be assigned to either Saturday, May 12, 2018, or Sunday, May 13, 2018, to take your test. Your admission notice will tell you where and when you are scheduled to appear. You cannot request a day in advance or change your scheduled day.

Minimum Qualifications

On or before May 12, 2018, you must have:

A bachelor���s degree or higher;

AND

One year of full-time experience in the development and/or implementation of educational or public programming in the subjects of history, art, or the sciences within a museum or cultural Institution.***

***For the purposes of this examination, the term ���cultural institution��� does not apply to any for-profit or not-for-profit corporation or organization which does not preserve and/or promote cultural collections.

If you expect to meet the educational requirements by September 30, 2018, you can be admitted to the written test, but you cannot be considered for appointment until you submit proof of successful completion of the educational requirements to the Appointing Authority at the time of the employment interview. Failure to meet the educational requirements by September 30, 2018 may result in your removal from the eligible list.

It is essential that you describe your education and/or experience as completely as possible on your application. Ambiguity, vagueness or omissions will not be decided in your favor. The information you provide in your application will be the only basis for determining if you meet the minimum qualifications.

Notes

  1. Your degree must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. This information can also be found on the Internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm. You must pay the required evaluation fee. If you are applying on the Internet, you must mail the independent verification of equivalency to the NYS Department of Civil Service, Albany, New York 12239. Attention: S2KXH.
  2. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  3. New York State residence is not required.

Duties

As a Museum Instructor, you would plan and deliver New York State Museum (NYSM) classes, instructional programs and public programs. This includes scheduling and providing classroom instruction sessions, through face to face and via distance learning formats, and utilizing technology methods in coordination with other Museum Instructors. You would be responsible for developing teacher guides, instructional lessons, programs and techniques for classroom use based on New York State standards with an emphasis on utilization of the NYSM collections and exhibits. You would prepare necessary teaching aids, promotional and informational booklets and materials for use by school teachers to supplement or substitute for direct NYSM classroom instructions. You would conduct research, collect and review reading materials, and work with NYSM staff in preparation for the development and delivery of classroom lessons. You would participate in the development of NYSM exhibits. You would assist with the preparation for major NYSM special events. You would also develop curriculum for NYSM summer programming initiatives and programming to support the NYSM���s after school enrichment programs. You may also provide programs and services to NYS schools and school districts as well as assist in the maintenance, procurement and organization of the teaching collections.

Subject of Examination

There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:

  1. Principles of educating and training - These questions test for the knowledge and abilities used to provide instruction to individuals and groups in settings typically outside the workplace. Instruction of this sort may be given to members of the public or groups with a specialized interest or concern. The questions address issues such as determining what is to be taught; developing and evaluating instructional plans; developing, using, and evaluating training methods and materials; motivation; learning; interacting with learners; and evaluating the success of instruction.
  2. Preparing written material - These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately, and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences.
  3. Understanding and interpreting written material - These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic.
  4. Public contact principles and practices - These questions test for knowledge of techniques used to interact with other people, to gather and present information, and to provide assistance, advice, and effective customer service in a courteous and professional manner. Questions will cover such topics as understanding and responding to people with diverse needs, perspectives, personalities, and levels of familiarity with agency operations, as well as acting in a way that both serves the public and reflects well on your agency.

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.

Admission to Examination

Notice to appear for the test may be conditional as review of applications may not be made until after the test. Taking State and Local Examinations Scheduled for the Same Day

If you have applied to take a written test announced by either one or several local jurisdictions (county, town, city) scheduled to be held on the same test date as this written test, you must notify each of the local jurisdictions no later than two weeks before the test date to make arrangements for taking all tests at one test site. All tests will be held at the state examination center. Cell Phones or Electronic/Communication Devices at the Test Site

Do not bring cell phones, beepers, headphones, or any electronic or other communication devices to the test site. The use of such devices at the test site in the test room, hallways, restrooms, building, grounds, or other areas could result in your disqualification.
