Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,026 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $1,513 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.
Geologist Traineeship Program: As a Geologist Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant Geologist, Grade 20. To advance to Assistant Geologist, you must have obtained proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) examination and successfully completed the requirements of the traineeship to the satisfaction of the appointing authority. At the discretion of the appointing authority, early advancement to Assistant Geologist is possible if you have obtained your FG and have successfully completed twelve months of the traineeship. It is your responsibility to notify the appointing authority's personnel office upon obtaining proof of passing the FG. You may receive an increase in salary upon obtaining your FG. Information about this increase will be provided by the appointing authority.
The Positions: These positions exist in the Department of Transportation and the Department of Environmental Conservation and are located statewide.

On or before August 1, 2022, you must have:
Either 1: a bachelor's degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology.
Or 2: Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Examination AND one year of experience in economic geology, hydrogeology, environmental geology or engineering geology.
Qualifying experience: If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. As a Geologist Trainee, you would work under the direction of a higher-level Geologist on projects performing investigations and analyses to support the design and construction of NYS highways, bridges, and other structures, or to support the investigation, remediation and management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste sites, or assist in the preparation and review of the geologic aspects of engineering and environmental investigations, reports, and studies. Duties may be performed in the field on projects and job sites, in the office, and/or in a laboratory. You might also serve as a technical advisor on construction or environmental projects and use computer-assisted techniques and software programs and databases.
Note: New York State residency is not required.

To be considered for appointment to this title, you must pass an online test. The online test consists of a questionnaire that asks questions about your education, training, and work experience. This online questionnaire IS YOUR TEST and should be completed after submitting your application. Responding to these questions, and submitting your questionnaire, is required to complete the examination process. You will not receive a score on this test unless you complete and submit the online questionnaire. You must complete the test by 11:59 pm on August 31, 2022.
The answers you provide to the questions will be used to rate and score your test against the general requirements of the position(s). To prepare, it may be helpful to have dates of completed education and work experience available as you answer questions. It is recommended you use a personal computer or personal laptop to complete your online test.
Your final score must be 70 or higher to pass. Your final score on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits.
Applicants are required to have a Personal NY.gov account and keep their email address up to date. The Department of Civil Service and other state agencies will communicate with you through email correspondence. This may include the notification of your test arrangements, examination results, and canvassing you for interest in appointment.
