Minimum Qualifications

On or before January 21, 2017, you must meet one of the following requirements:

For No. 26-205010:

Either 1. a bachelor???s degree or higher;

Or 2. an associate???s degree AND two years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR two years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR two years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement;

Or 3. four years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR four years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR four years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement.

For No. 26-206010:

  1. Your degree must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.   2. Physical/Medical Requirements: Your physical and medical condition will be evaluated to ensure that you are able to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. The physical/medical standards include good physical condition and satisfactory hearing and vision. A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee.   3. These positions require substantial travel. Appointees must have either a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have access to a motor vehicle, or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position. Field work travel expenses will be reimbursed on a fixed schedule.
  4. Fingerprints and Fees: Fingerprinting is required at the time of appointment. You will be required to pay the processing fee.
  5. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  6. New York State residence is not required.

Duties

As a Safety and Health Inspector Trainee, you would, under direct supervision, receive on-the-job training while performing duties similar to those described for Safety and Health Inspector. Upon satisfactory completion of a one-year traineeship, you would advance to the position of Safety and Health Inspector G-16 without further examination. As a Safety and Health Inspector, you would plan, schedule, and conduct safety and health inspections of selected worksites such as: state, county, city, and town office buildings, hospitals, correctional facilities, and sewage treatment plants. Such worksites may include asbestos abatement projects. Safety and Health Inspectors would also conduct inspections of places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs and amusement parks, explosives magazines, power scaffolds and other window-washing operations. These inspections are made in order to ensure conformance with established standards, identifying unsafe conditions and work practices, and to protect workers and the public.

Subject of Examination

There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as: For Examination Numbers

1. Preparing written material - These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately, and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences. X X
2. Understanding and interpreting written material - These questions test how well you comprehend written material. You will be provided with brief reading selections and will be asked questions about the selections. All the information required to answer the questions will be presented in the selections; you will not be required to have any special knowledge relating to the subject areas of the selections. X X
3. Simple computations and reading and interpreting technical data and plans - These questions test for the ability to perform simple mathematical computations which may involve addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages; and to read and analyze diagrams and written technical material. X X
4. Evaluating information and evidence - These questions test for the ability to evaluate and draw conclusions from information and evidence. Each question consists of a set of facts and a conclusion based on the facts. The candidate must decide if the conclusion is warranted by the facts. X  
5. Inspection and interviewing techniques - These questions test your ability to select the proper course of action in situations which might occur during routine inspections. Question topics may cover, but will not be limited to, such areas as interviewing, gathering information and evidence, maintaining proper attitude, and handling irregularities and violations with integrity and sound judgment. Some questions may be in a situational format while others may deal with the proper principles and practices of inspection.   X
6. Occupational health and safety including accident prevention and control - These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational health and safety, and accident prevention and control, including such areas as causes of accidents, accident rates, behavior and attitudes of workers and supervisors, accident investigations and interviewing techniques, and types of accident prevention and safety programs.   X
7. Fire prevention, fire inspections, and fire hazards - These questions test for a knowledge of the methods, principles, practices, and equipment of fire prevention, conducting fire inspections, and dealing with fire hazards. The questions cover such areas as the following: fire prevention campaigns; automatic and other extinguishment systems; alarms; dealing with building owners and managers; characteristics of combustible materials; recognizing proper and improper practices related to fire prevention; and codes and regulations related to fire prevention.   X

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.

Admission to Examination
