Job Description

As a Youth Communications Aide in the Central Communication Unit, you would report information accurately in a Microsoft Access database, assess and route incident reports called in from agency facilities and field offices, and initiate and cancel warrants and detainers. In addition, you would act as the on-call service for the Office of Children and Family Services executive and operations personnel during off business hours, forwarding necessary information to Community Multi Services, Detention/Voluntary Agencies, the Public Information Office, Executive Office, and other Bureau of Classification and Movement Units, as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

You must meet the requirements below to qualify for this title.

You must have one year of full-time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency including fire departments, emergency medical services, or law enforcement agency; OR one year of active-duty service as a dispatcher of military police or security personnel and an honorable discharge or under conditions in the NYS Restoration of Honor Act; OR 30 semester college credit hours from an accredited college or university.

Qualifying Experience includes but is not limited to: dispatching law enforcement personnel, military police, emergency medical or fire personnel, or personnel involved in incident management.

Incident management describes the necessary actions taken by an organization's incident management team or incident management officer to analyze, identify, and correct problems while taking actions that can prevent future incidents. An incident is defined as, an occurrence that can disrupt or cause a loss of operations, services, or functions.

Non-Qualifying Experience includes but is not limited to: dispatching related to fleet management (taxis, limousines, car service, delivery services), roadside assistance, private security guard work, or experience in a customer call center.

Additional Requirements for Appointment

  1. These positions require shift work within a 24-hour work schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  2. Appointees will be required to obtain certification by the end of the probation period in the eJusticeNY Integrated Justice Portal which is a browser-based application designed to give users from qualified agencies a single point of access to necessary computerized information regarding youth served. Training will be conducted during employment. Failure to obtain or maintain certification may result in action to remove you from the position.
  3. Background Investigation/Justice Center Review: In some agencies, the names of all prospective employees will

    • be checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL), maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s);
    • be investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC). You must report all convictions. Conviction of a felony or misdemeanor or any falsified or omitted information may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of state and federal law;

    And may

    • be screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees whose names appear on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
