Job Description

As a Secure Care Treatment Aide 1, you would assist in the psychiatric treatment, rehabilitation, and care and safety of individuals diagnosed with mental illness or with emotional or social behavior problems. This may include those who are considered to be manipulative, treatment resistant, and/or dangerous to themselves and/or others. You would participate in active treatment programming and provide a safe, secure, and stable environment within which these patients can be given the intensive care and behavioral interactions needed for stabilization and treatment.

You must meet the requirements below to qualify for this title.

a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma or similar equivalency such as a General Education Development Certification or higher degree.

Additional Requirements for Appointment

Your high school diploma or equivalency diploma must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university, high school, or educational institution or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your high school diploma was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. This information can also be found on the Internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm. You must pay the required evaluation fee.

Additional vacancies are anticipated which may include Spanish language positions. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the Spanish language at a level that will ensure their ability to perform properly the duties of the positions. If other language parenthetics are established, appointees must demonstrate their language proficiency prior to appointment.

Depending on assignment, you may be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.

Physical/Medical Requirements: Your physical and medical condition will be evaluated to ensure that you are able to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. The physical/medical standards include a physical fitness test, a medical standards evaluation, and a substance abuse screening. Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position. Eligibles will be called to the physical/medical screening in score order as needed to fill existing and anticipated vacancies.

Drug Testing: Prior to appointment, you will be required to participate in a drug-screening test. Failure to meet the standards may result in your disqualification.

Background Investigation/Justice Center Review: The names of all prospective employees will

  • be checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s);
  • Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC). All convictions must be reported. Conviction of a felony or misdemeanor or any falsified or omitted information may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of state and federal laws;

And may

  • be screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees whose names appear on the SCR may be barred from appointment. (NY Social Services Law, Section 424a.)
