Job Description

Registered Nurse 2 (Psychiatric): advanced performance level; provides clinical consultation and training on all aspects of psychiatric nursing; and plans, supervises, and provides nursing care to individuals with mental illness, addiction, and/or substance use disorder in facilities and programs operated by the Office of Mental Health and Office of Addiction Services and Supports

Minimum Qualifications

You must meet the requirements below to qualify for this title.

Possession of license and current registration as a registered professional nurse in New York State and two years of post-licensure clinical nursing experience working with individuals, at least 50% of whom have been diagnosed with mental illness, addiction, or substance use disorder.

Substitution: a bachelor's degree in nursing may substitute for one year of post-licensure clinical nursing experience; and a master's degree in nursing may substitute for two years of post-licensure clinical nursing experience.

Additional Requirements for Appointment

  1. Background Investigation/Justice Center Review: In some agencies, the names of all prospective employees will be:
    • Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred f rom appointment and may have their names removed f rom the eligible list(s) for the title(s);
    • Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC). All convictions must be reported. Conviction of a felony or misdemeanor or any falsified or omitted information may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of state and federal laws;
    and may be:
    • Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees whose names appear on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
    You will be responsible for payment of all required fees.
  2. Medicaid and Medicare: In order to be eligible for appointment and to maintain employment, you cannot be listed asan excluded individual or entity on any of the Federal and/or State Medicaid and Medicare exclusion lists (or excluded from any other Federal or Federally assisted program). If you are appointed and subsequently listed as an excluded individual or entity on any of these lists (or excluded from any other Federal or Federally assisted program), you may be terminated from your employment.
