Job Description

As an Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Program Assistant Trainee in a New York State correctional facility, you would provide ongoing treatment services to inmates with substance use disorders. You would develop treatment findings and conclusions based on an admission and comprehensive evaluation; establish a substance use disorder diagnostic impression; develop and implement a person-centered treatment plan for each assigned inmate; continually evaluate and document the level and quality of participation and progression towards reasonably applied goals for each inmate; and provide services to ensure successful treatment. You would work with other facility staff and provide such services in a variety of treatment modalities in order to assist the inmate in addiction rehabilitation. These services include: recruiting, screening, orientation, assessment, treatment planning and reviewing, coordinating educational and treatment services using various media, continuing recovery planning, and individual and group counseling. You would be responsible for all mandatory treatment recording. Trainees will receive a combination of structured training, on-the-job training, and/or practical job performance to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to function at the full performance. After one year of satisfactory service as an Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Program Assistant Trainee, you would advance without further examination to the full title of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Program Assistant, G-14.

Minimum Qualifications

You must meet the requirements below to qualify for this title.

Either 1. two years of qualifying experience*;
Or 2. an associate degree or higher in an approved area**;
Or 3. a current certification as a New York State Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor Trainee (CASAC-T).

*Qualifying experience consists of professional or paraprofessional experience in a program whose primary mission is alcohol and/or substance abuse treatment. The program can be in a hospital, correctional facility, school, community based prevention/intervention program or other addiction recovery program. Your experience must include all of the following functions:

  • Individual or group counseling
  • Intake/assessment
  • Treatment planning
  • Case work
  • Consultation

Your counseling or casework experience must have focused primarily on the establishment of an ongoing, one-to-one relationship between you and your client, to establish and maintain recovery, and prevent relapse. Group experience must have focused primarily on responsibility for conducting group sessions designed to provide the participants with services for alcohol/substance abuse problems.

**Approved associate or higher degree areas for these examinations are: anthropology, audiology, child development/family relations, community mental health, chemical dependence administration, correctional studies, counseling/guidance, criminal justice, education, gerontology, health administration, health education, human services, nursing, nutrition, pastoral counseling, psychology, public justice, rehabilitation counseling, religious studies, social work, sociology, special education, speech pathology, therapy (including art, dance, drama, music, occupational, physical and recreational) and vocational counseling.

Additional Requirements for Appointment

  1. Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.   2. Background Investigation: Because of the nature of the position there is an investigative screening that may include a thorough character investigation. All convictions must be reported. Conviction of a felony or misdemeanor or any falsified or omitted information may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case is determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of state and federal laws.
  3. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  4. New York State residence is not required.
