Job Description

As an Offender Rehabilitation Coordinator (Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment) in a New York State correctional facility, you would provide ongoing counseling and treatment services to inmates with substance use disorders. You would develop treatment findings and conclusions based on an admission and comprehensive evaluation; establish a substance use disorder diagnostic impression; develop and implement a person-centered treatment plan for each assigned inmate; continually evaluate and document the level and quality of participation and progression towards reasonably applied goals for each inmate; and provide services to ensure successful treatment. You would work with other facility staff and provide services in a variety of treatment modalities in order to assist the inmate in addiction rehabilitation. These services include recruiting, screening, orientation, assessment, treatment planning and reviewing, coordinating educational and treatment services using various media, continuing recovery planning, and individual and group counseling. You would be responsible for all mandatory treatment recording. You may interview and provide referral services to parolees with alcohol and/or substance abuse problems and may consult with and provide information to parole officers regarding paroleesÂ’ treatment needs and resources. Additionally, you would be responsible for: guidance management functions; all mandatory treatment recording; membership on treatment plan review committees; and supervision of assigned Program Assistant staff. As an Offender Rehabilitation Coordinator (Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment) (Spanish Language), you will be required to perform the duties of an Offender Rehabilitation Coordinator (Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment) for a caseload which includes monolingual Spanish-speaking offenders.

Minimum Qualifications

You must meet the requirements below to qualify for this title.

Either 1. a bachelor's degree, and current certification as a New York State Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC), and one year of post certification experience as a group or individual counselor in a recognized alcohol and/or substance abuse treatment program providing ongoing counseling services in this area;

Or 2. a specialized* bachelor's degree and two years of experience as a group or individual counselor in a recognized alcohol and/or substance abuse treatment program providing ongoing counseling services in this area;

Or 3. a specialized* master's degree and one year of experience as a group or individual counselor in a recognized alcohol and/or substance abuse treatment program providing ongoing counseling services in this area.

*The specialized master's or bachelor's degree areas that are approved are: anthropology, audiology, child development/family relations, community mental health, chemical dependence administration, correctional studies, counseling/guidance, criminal justice, education, gerontology, health administration, health education, human services, nursing, nutrition, pastoral counseling, psychology, public justice, rehabilitation counseling, religious studies, social work, sociology, special education, speech pathology, therapy (including art, dance, drama, music, occupational, physical and recreational), or vocational counseling.

Qualifying Experience: To qualify, individual counseling experience must have involved the establishment of an ongoing, one-to-one relationship between the counselor and the client. Group counseling experience must have included responsibility for conducting group sessions designed to provide the participants with services for alcohol and drug abuse.

Non-qualifying Experience: Group work oriented toward behavior modification in such areas as self-improvement, tobacco cessation, crisis intervention, or case management alone is NOT qualifying experience.

  • Background Investigation: Because of the nature of the position there is an investigative screening that may include a thorough character investigation. All convictions must be reported. Conviction of a felony or misdemeanor or any falsified or omitted information may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case is determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of state and federal laws.
  • Fingerprints and Fees: Fingerprinting is required at the time of appointment. You will be required to pay the processing fee.
