Direct Support Assistants
Overview
Direct Support Assistants perform a variety of tasks related to support and service including care; nurturing; developing daily living skills and habits; guidance and education; advocating; socialization; community integration; habilitation; support maintaining a healthy, safe home environment; supporting treatment, recovery, healing. The starting salary for Direct Support Assistnat positions is $37,507.
These positions exist in the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities in New York State facilities and community-based settings.
Direct Support Assistant Positions
Direct Support Assistants (DSA), SG-9 are found in the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities in facilities and community-based settings statewide. Direct Support Assistants help individuals with developmental disabilities lead richer lives. Under supervision, DSAs provide supports and services which involve advocating for, encouraging, guiding and teaching individuals in expressing personal choice, ensuring community integration, assisting individuals with personal hygiene care, toileting, lifts and transfers, dining, dressing, and meal preparation. DSAs help individuals to participate in games and recreational programs; coach and encourage individuals to develop daily living skills; and provide a clean, safe, and comfortable environment. DSAs work with other staff to carry out and record care plans and, in accordance with special instructions, you may administer medication. These positions are physically demanding. A DSA needs to be prepared to act to ensure the health and safety of individuals in emergency situations. The Application and Examination Process
Interested candidates can apply directly to the hiring agencies. The hiring agencies are responsible for reviewing qualifications and adding candidates to their eligible list(s). Agencies will communicate directly with candidates regarding requests for additional information on qualifications and score notices. In addition, agencies will be responsible for canvassing (e.g., inquiring about your interest in the job and location) the eligible lists to fill their vacancies.

Direct Support Assistant Application Process
In order to qualify for a Direct Support Assistant position, you must posses a high school diploma, General Equivalency Degree (GED), or equivalent Or a Direct Support (DSP) Certificate.
If you are interested in the Direct Support Assistant position you must apply directly to the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities State Operations Office (Office) for the area they are interested in working in by mailing a completed NYS-APP#4, 20-149. The hiring agency personnel office will provide instruction on how to compete in an examination to be considered for permanent appointment.
