Description:

Qualifications: This opportunity is open to all students studying in the Criminal Justice Field, and presently working towards their Associates or Bachelor's Degree. Applicants are encouraged to have a general knowledge of the New York State Criminal Justice System, use of office technology, a willingness to learn and strong professional boundaries.

Goal of Position: Successful completion of required Criminal Justice field experience working within several Departments at Sullivan Correctional Facility in the role of intern, as part of their Undergraduate program. Students will learn theory and practice specific to the Criminal Justice system, and will obtain the tools to develop and practice critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Duties and Tasks: Under supervision of the Assistant Deputy Superintendent, the student's education will be collaborated through a DOCCS multidisciplinary team which includes; the Office of Mental Health, Community Supervision, Security, Program, Medical, Business and Administration. Interns will assist staff with Initial Inmate Assessments, Orientation, Casework Counseling, Psychoeducational Treatment and Community Supervision Assessments and Preparation. Additionally, interns will have the opportunity to work with the Inmate Records Department, where they will learn the important fundamentals of Inmate Placement, Classification and Security Guidelines. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in team/department meetings and Specialized Trainings.

Hours: Student can be assigned to volunteer up to 40 hours per week, and will receive 1 hour of Supervision weekly with the Assistant Deputy Superintendent or appointee. Additionally, the student will receive ongoing, direct supervision from his/her assigned area Supervisor.
