Proposal Information

Description:

The New York State Department of Financial Services ("Department") is seeking motivated law school students to serve as legal interns in its Albany and Manhattan offices for the fall semester. The Department is the primary state regulator charged with enforcing the Banking, Insurance, and Financial Services laws, promoting the safety and soundness of banks and insurers, and protecting consumers from financial fraud and abuse.

Legal interns may be placed in the Department's office of general counsel, enforcement division, financial frauds and consumer protection division, real estate finance division, capital markets division, banking division, or insurance division. Legal interns may assist with investigating violations of New York Banking, Insurance, and Financial Services laws, perform legal research and analysis, and draft industry guidance, legislation, and regulations. Interns can expect to work in a dynamic office and make meaningful contributions, while gaining valuable research, writing, and investigative experience.

The Department is interested in students who write well, have strong research skills, are attentive to detail, can multi-task, and have good time management skills. Students who are interested in government regulation, business law, banking law, insurance law, cyber security, or public policy would find this an excellent placement.

Positions will be filled based upon availability. Applicants must be in their second or third year of law school and in good academic standing. Applicants must be able to commit to working at least 15 hours per week for at least eight weeks. This is a non-paying internship, but applicants may intern for school credit.

Applicants must submit a resume with their law school GPA and should specify whether they are interested in interning in the Albany or Manhattan office.
