All salary grades for trainees titles are non-statutory (NS) equated to the salary grade identified. These grade equations apply to the starting salaries in their respective salary schedule for the traineeship levels.

Job Description

Climate Policy Analysts research and analyze policy developments related to climate change, and make climate-related recommendations for actions such as legislation, regulations, funding, awareness campaigns, and policy by preparing information for media and public dissemination of information; researching and gathering information on projects; reporting on and making recommendations based on independent investigations and analyses; communicating with a variety of groups, including division and agency personnel, technical specialists in other areas and agencies, consultants, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and members of the general public or special interest groups; independently planning, scheduling and performing work, selecting methodology, analyzing and evaluating information and developing recommended solutions to problems under general guidance of supervisor; functioning as an expert in one specific environmental area; and interacting with programs outside of the agency, as needed.

Trainees will receive a combination of structured training, on-the-job training, and/or practical job performance to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to function at the full performance level.

A bachelor's degree or higher in atmospheric science, biology, chemistry, coastal resources management, communications, ecology, economics, ecosystem management, engineering, environmental health, environmental science, environmental studies, forestry, geography, geology, hydrology, marine science, meteorology, natural resources, natural science, physical science, physics, planning, public administration, public policy, public policy and management, sustainability, transportation planning, wildlife science, or zoology.

Advanced Placement

If chosen, you may, at the agency's discretion, be appointed to a higher level. You must inform the agency of any additional qualifications at your interview.

For Trainee 2 you must also have:

Either 1. a master's degree or higher in atmospheric science, biology, chemistry, coastal resources management, communications, ecology, economics, ecosystem management, engineering, environmental health, environmental science, environmental studies, forestry, geography, geology, hydrology, marine science, meteorology, natural resources, natural science, physical science, physics, planning, public administration, public policy, public policy and management, sustainability, transportation planning, wildlife science, or zoology; OR

2. one year of professional experience in the establishment of environmental policy; preparing, implementing, or reviewing climate relevant policies, plans, projects, regulations or environmental impact statements; preparing climate-relevant materials involving environmental matters; or professional testimony for use in hearings or trials involving environmental matters; or preparing environmental analysis of climate change issues.

For the Full Performance Level you must also have:

Either 1. a master's degree or higher in atmospheric science, biology, chemistry, coastal resources management, communications, ecology, economics, ecosystem management, engineering, environmental health, environmental science, environmental studies, forestry, geography, geology, hydrology, marine science, meteorology, natural resources, natural science, physical science, physics, planning, public administration, public policy, public policy and management, sustainability, transportation planning, wildlife science, or zoology AND one year of professional experience in the establishment of environmental policy; preparing, implementing, or reviewing climate relevant policies, plans, projects, regulations or environmental impact statements; preparing climate-relevant materials involving environmental matters; or professional testimony for use in hearings or trials involving environmental matters; or preparing environmental analysis of climate change issues OR
