Job Description

Public Health Specialists enforce the provisions of New York State's Public Health Law (PHL) and other State and federal laws, rules, and regulations relating to community environmental health, sanitation, and safety. Incumbents conduct on-site inspections and surveys to evaluate environmental health conditions and/or regulatory and code compliance to improve the health, safety, and well-being of individuals and the public; and provide technical assistance to local health departments/units (LHU), healthcare facilities, and other organizations with a specific focus on environmental health.

Minimum Qualifications

You must meet the requirements below to qualify for this title.

Either 1. A qualifying bachelor's degree* AND two years of experience conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state or local environmental health laws, regulations, or established public health standards; and/or monitoring public health environmental hazards and/or developing methods to control or eliminate such hazards or the spread of disease OR

2. A bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 30 qualifying semester credit hours* AND two years of experience conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state or local environmental health laws, regulations, or established public health standards; and/or monitoring public health environmental hazards and/or developing methods to control or eliminate such hazards or the spread of disease OR

3. A qualifying master's degree* AND one year experience conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state or local environmental health laws, regulations, or established public health standards; and/or monitoring public health environmental hazards and/or developing methods to control or eliminate such hazards or the spread of disease OR

4. A master's degree including or supplemented by 30 qualifying semester credit hours* AND one year experience conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state or local environmental health laws, regulations, or established public health standards; and/or monitoring public health environmental hazards and/or developing methods to control or eliminate such hazards or the spread of disease.
