All salary grades for trainees titles are non-statutory (NS) equated to the salary grade identified. These grade equations apply to the starting salaries in their respective salary schedule for the traineeship levels.

Job Description

Trainees receive on-the-job and/or structured training to gain the knowledge and experience necessary at the full performance level to perform professional forestry work in such areas as the management, development, and protection of forest stands; reforestation; and the public use of forest lands. They may coordinate pesticide use on State land and provide technical advice to private owners concerning forest management and the Forest Tax Law. They assist communities with urban forest management. They provide information to the general public and communities on forest land management and to both the general public and forest industries on the utilization and marking of forest produces. They may assist in the administration of New York State Forest Preserve lands, State reforestation, and multiple use lands and game management areas; develop and coordinate an integrated forest resources management plan; assist in the development of forest recreation and tree inspection programs; and conduct forest inventories, investigation, and research.

Minimum Qualifications

You must meet the requirements below to qualify for this title.

Coursework Requirements

15 semester credit hours in forestry including silvics or silvicuture, forest mensuration, forest inventory, forest soils, dendrology and forest management AND 25 semester credit hours in three or more of the following areas: forest protection, wilderness management, natural resource planning, geographic information systems, forest ecology, forest recreation, forest biology, hydrology, forest engineering, timber harvesting, forest pathology or forest and woods product engineering
